I personally had an inline filter for one season after I bought the bike, only because I had to do a decent cleaning job in the tank and wanted to make sure I caught any junk...after that, I got rid of it.
Sorry to hijack this thread, but have you had any issues since you removed it? I was in the same boat and the first filter only lasted about 300 Kms. Since then I haven't changed it in 10000 Kms with no problems, just a bit wary of ditching the thing altogether.

Nope, no issues. After about 1000 miles the tank was clean and I just dumped it. Anything that gets through the tank screen will just burn off anyway...I was just being cautious with all the stuff I had broken loose.

Junk: If it is running extremely lean, try the spray test around the carbs. Use carb cleaner or something of that nature. While it's running spray around the intake boots, around all the hose lines on the carb, the throttle linkage, and then around the coots betwwen the carbs and head. If the rpms change while you are spraying...you have an air leak.

I'm not too far off. I can hit 180km/h pretty comfortably. Naked GS, 250lbs with gear, tucking, but not exactly laying on the tank or anything.

It's advertised as have a 175kmh stop speed, but I think that's on the safe side. Only mods I have are a jardine exhaust and a rejet.

to test the carbs, would i need to connect another fuel source since the tank is in the way of the carbs?

would a leak in the muffler also cause a similar effect?

treskie

i got to 106 with a tuck i still had about 3k rpms left so i am guessing like 111mph would have been my max. honestly no need to go that fast on a naked as it is uncomfortable. and the wind noise oh... the wind noise is deafening even with ear plugs.

Soloratov

You don't need to remove anything to do the spray test...just use a new can with a straw. As far as the exhaust leak, no, not really. It would have to be such a bad leak that that you would know without asking. If there is an air leak issue, it will be around the carbs. Also, do you have the stock air filter or aftermarket drop in? Drop in will say K&N most likely on it, and you can just lift it out of the airbox.

wd-40 would work. Ok i will give it a shot

The early GSs were the fastest I think, the first Cycle World stock test in April 91 reported a 111 mph top speed.  They previously had reported a 121 mph top on the V&H modified GS they covered in Aug 89:

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

ok, seriously now. make three passes each with 104 octane, 93 octane, and 87 octane in your gs's otherwise empty tank. since this could turn into another stupid fuel thread, just post the results, from a GPS, not your speedometer.

for the OP:

you shouldn't loose any speed by going from F to E setup. i wouldn't be surprised if you lost 2-3 MPG though. if your top speed is less than 85mph, something is wrong.

yeah I'm.pretty sure its not an engine issue. Its only running on prime so I'm going to inspect the petcock and fuel lines since I can't detect any leaks in the carbs. after letting it run on prime I switched it to on. after idleing for 5 min it died. however I was able to turn it back on and keep it on with a little throttle. however when I tried revving it, it felt like it wanted to die but it was just sputtering. so I shut it off.

Just don't get arrested.  I personally don't want to see you riding your bike naked.  Clothes really don't add that much drag, but if you really want to go for it, maybe you should shave all the hair off your body and wear a swim cap Michael Phelps style!  :dunno_white:
