Both of the cats we owned came from the local animal shelter. My wife likes to say that the reason she picked out one of them is that he was on his hind legs with front paws on window and he was licking the glass. The other one had a stubby tail from birth, but they were both the most loving cats we could have asked for.

Unfortunately, we had to give them up when we moved because we have two sister-in-laws who are deathly allergic to them. They both went to a no-kill shelter and were adopted within 6 weeks.

Still miss them, and would get another if it didn't mean our sister-in-laws couldn't come to our house.

Funny that you cannot have cats because of the sisters in law.  If they are that allergic they should be in a bubble.  Proper management is all that is needed.  This is simply because cat remnants are actually everywhere so they cannot avoid them.  Even if they go to the Antarctic scientific stations where no cat has ever been taken, there are traces of domestic cat allergens. 

Yeah, probably poor choice of words on my part. They have drugs they take to ward off their allergic reactions, but the drugs generally make them sleepy and poor company.
