I was looking to buy either a working engine or a crankshaft for my current gs500f project. The fairings I have are crap so if anyone has any aftermarket/used cheapo ones I might be interested in.

Forgot the mention the bikes 2004 so im not exactly sure which year engines would fit on it.

Any year engine will work. If pre 2004, you will need to change the timing pick up and timing rotor. Then insure you use your 2004 carb boots (with new o rings).

Lack of oil cooler on pre-2004 engines would not be an issue. Just remove it from your frame.

The above is if you do a complete engine replacement.

If you just replace the crank, then any year should work. Some of the engine rebuilders can correct me if I'm wrong or add additional advice.

Easier to just do a complete engine swap. You can use your existing head if better, and even your jugs and pistons. They fit all years.

Pre 2004 heads will have a tach cable thing. Just block that off since your tach is electronic.

I always thought the cranks were the same also

The only problem with buying a used crank like off ebay or such is they NEVER give specs or mic the cam to see if it is usable. Because it came out of a running engine they say it is good. It could BARELY be in spec and be a disaster waiting to happen and what will you do about it once you put it in and later find out otherwise?
