Hi all,

Just wanted to say this is a great resource!

I took the MSF course last month and just got my  endorsement so this is my first bike.  I searched 5 states and in the end found it 20 mi from my house.  A new to me 2002 GS500 with 5300 mi.  Cosmetically very good but it had been sitting a while and was not running well.  With the information here I cleaned the carbs and now its running great.  Never worked on a bike before (car guy) and was actually surprised how easy it was and how few parts.  These things seem pretty simple.  Left side main and right side mid jets were completely blocked.  I bought it from the original owner who said it had been "rejetted for ethanol fuels" by the dealer.  Not sure what that was supposed to mean but when I opened up the carbs I found 17.5/60/127 which I think are stock jets?  He told me it had been recently serviced and I actually spoke to the mechanic that did the work.  Everyone said carbs were cleaned but to me it looked like no one had ever been in there.  No tool marks on screws, etc.

Just took it for a brief ride and it is 1000% better.  It was just about unrideable before with horrible lag in the bottom end of the rpm range.  Now throttle response is crisp and its a whole different animal.

I look forward to putting on some miles!

I think adidasguy has the "basic carb cleaning" video on You Tube?  This was extremely helpful in pulling everything apart so a shout out to him for producing a great video for newbs.

Yes that would be him and yes he does a great job on the tube
