06 Mustang 4.0L Issue - Help?

2006 Mustang 4.0L V6 Pony Package, 5spd manual. 77k miles.

Had a strange issue with this car. Pulled into a gas station for smokes, cut the car off. No biggie. Come back out to start it back up and it cranks all day but won't fire/barely fires. I was able to get it to BARELY run by nursing the accelerator pedal. It ran like sh*t, of course. It was like it was running out of gas/had no gas.

Did some quick reading on my phone and then pressed the "red button" next that's hidden in the side-floor paneling that resets the fuel pump (I think that's what it does). Car started right back up and ran fine from there on.

Am I correct in assuming this is the same thing as the inertial switch that shuts off the fuel in the event of an accident? My mother, years ago, tripped the one in our Escort by hitting a curb. It showed the exact same symptoms. Crank all day...no start. Found and reset the switch and presto! Problem solved.

Here's what gets me...nothing happened to the 'Stang that even remotely resembled an accident. It ran fine, drove through a little light rain, and that was it. I have no idea why this happened. And I want to know WHY it happened. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yup the fuel cutoff switch. got miss piggy to fire ( my 4.6 cvpi)  by resetting it. ( mine was in trunk. )

What ... is there on in my truck ... 97 F 150 4.6 v8 ... it runs fine, but need to know just in case.

not sure on your truck, mine was in trunk on drivers side, if yours is outside underneath truck, it should be on same side as pump. start at tank and go forwards

Now...can anybody explain WHY this might've happened when there was no jarring of the car in any way, shape, or form? Not even so much as a pothole.

Sometimes it just happens.  Heard it happening a few times over the years.

The good thing is it will probably be the last time it ever happens.

Must be eh! ... I have heard of it but never seen it here .... Maybe on some newer cars perhaps....

But I suspect that ford or Holden would not fit such a thing in Aussie ... Make it too easy to just press button and continue... Instead of taking car to service centre and paying for 'technical resolution of fault' ... Ka-Ching!!  :icon_rolleyes:

Someone could've walked by and smack the side of your car near the inertia switch.  Had an old collegue do that to the crown vic cop cars anytime he walked by one.

It's an analog sensor. Magnet with a big steel ball, if enough g-force is applied to it, the ball will break free from the magnet's pull and open the circuit. Only possible explanation I can see is that the magnet isn't as strong as it should be or something like that.

Nope, no subwoofers or anything other than stock. I think we figured it out. Took a rather sharp turn/braking into the gas station (almost missed the turn). I think that's probably what did it. All is well.
