I went to school with Derek, him and I were not very close but it is upsetting to know a kid I had I known lost his life soo early. I beg all drivers, car or motorcycle, look twice. Derek was a great kid, everyone loved him. So tonight, say a prayer and be glad you are still alive because who knows when you will take your last breath. Thank you to anyone who read this

I think this is one of the reasons I could be classified as an "angry rider". It just seems like around here, (western NY), drivers are just getting dumber and more useless every year. I make sure I am constantly on the OFFENSIVE when I ride. This way I am in control of what is around me. Maybe it's bad form, but I am always thoughtful, and polite when out and about...but at this point, I make sure that if you are reckless and stupid, you get the message real quick and will think a little more.

Soloratov, it's not just NY, it's everywhere.

I've only been riding for about a year now, and already I've run out of fingers to count close calls, not for lack of caution.
I've also changed my driving habits quite a bit since riding.

My thoughts go out to the Sheldon and Stillwell families.

I know someone that was involved in a very similar incident.  A friend of a former co-worker of mine, he was in the car making the left across traffic, the biker had his GSXR modified to run without the headlight and taillight, and judging from the distance he traveled in the air the biker was going well over the speed limit...
He went to court for quite some time, the family of the biker was very aggressive to get compensation for his death.  However, the biker was breaking the law and the driver was not.

It messed him up pretty bad, he's been a borderline alcoholic ever since.  Can't say we ever got along, but I feel bad for him none the less.

he was coming north bound down a hill, i know the area very well and know that hill is wide open, no turns or anything so you can see up the entire thing. i am not sure whether speed was a factor or not. i have only been riding for about 4 months on street bikes and have learned that you must be an agressive rider. especially in the rochester area, seems like they have their own rules. i just hope everyone realizes that anything can happen at the blink of the eye, whether its the car or bikers fault.

Riding for only 4 months and you already have the mindset of needing to be an "aggressive rider."   :icon_eek:  To save you from some pain and your family from some heartache, change your outlook from being agressive to "intelligently proactive."

The best way to stay safe on a moto is to use your brain.  You seem like you have a good wit about ya, just learn to sharpen it some and it will end up saving your life someday.  Being aggressive will lead to nothing but a crash.  Learn to intelligently "read the road and its drivers" and you'll have a very happy moto carreer.

Bummer about all that are involved in that tragedy, hope the young girl pulls through.  Sucks for all involved.

I went to school in Rochester, if you think your drivers are bad, come ride for a few days in SF...

What a shame. It reminds me to not get too comfortable with my surroundings when I ride.
