Touchy throttle..

Went for a ride today and realized that a little bit of throttle is not really possible.. I try to give a little throttle and she flies.. Do I need to adjust the throttle cable and if so where do I adjust it to?

Janx101

errr .. they are a sensitive throttle... but then .. most are...

when you says she flies .. like .. revs keep climbing till redline? .. or 'it just seems really fast' but the revs are midrange on the tach ?

'a little throttle' is pretty ambiguous/subjective .. if you marked the top of the grip and say .. turned it 10 degrees ... or (thinking) 3-4mm/eighth of an inch (roughly) back towards you .. that 'should' increase revs enough to move off safely in 1st gear kinda thing... whereas 25mm/1 inch  or about 35 degrees (roughly) will have you accelerating quite a bit ! ..

not having a go at you in any way .. but whats your overall experience and previous experience?.... my nephew was completely green to motorbikes and had in his head that 'twisting the throttle like he used to on his pushbike while making motor noises' (he's 10 years old) .. on the little chinese dirtbike we got him ... was the best way to approach it ... it worked in a way .. now he knows that the landscape will meet him if he gets carried away! ..

my perception of the GS throttle is this ... i can be cruising on the freeway in 6th gear and a mere flex of my hand as if i was lifting my straightened fingertips 1cm off the desktop is enough to change the speed by 10-15km/h... i can be moving through a parking lot in 1st gear and the same movement of hand will result in 2-3 ? km/h?

IIRC the GS throttle is 1/4? of a turn to WOT (Wide Open Throttle) ... 90 degrees? ... and some riders want to change to a different ratio of 1/5th turn or 72 degrees .. so not much movement does mean a noticeable change..

It just seems really fast when rpm are only midrange on the tach.. But sometimes when I get ready to leave from a stop sign or red light and I give it throttle it she won't go any faster than 5 mph and it just sits there and then will randomly speed up rapidly after I pull the clutch back in and let it back out gradually while give it throttle .. That's not normal, right?

Janx101

hrrrrm ... trying to visualise that ...

apart from your own perception of what and how much throttle is used each time... and what gear you may actually start in (cos you can get it moving while in 2nd eh!.. not tried 3rd yet really  :icon_rolleyes:)...

your description might suggest bogging and surging of the engine ... which suggests ..sticky cable/throttle issues? , fuel/air flow issues?, carb setup issues?, perhaps an electrical issue/s also ... all of which are fixable!  :thumb:

but it might be you getting used to the bike too? .. with familiarity issues  ;)

do you have any buddies around that have been on/around bikes for quite a while? ... maybe let them take it around the block and give you their perceptions on anything they notice about it... a 2nd or 3rd opinion from actually hearing/seeing/riding it will never hurt ... im not saying it will be accurate either.... or even saying i am accurate with my thinking here...  :dunno_black:

I actually let a buddy take it around the block today.. He says it runs really good.. He's probably right. He also told me it will take at least 6 months to get used to the bike. I probably just need more practice.. In fact I definitely still need practice because I still stall out on hills.. I'll just practice on everything and replace all things that may need replacing

Super sensitive. You have to at least master either the clutch or the throttle. Mastering both is great but you better at least master one because that SOB will fly

Same deal on my 750, I'm still getting used to it honestly. That and the whole hit a bump, accidently twist and hope you were holding on good part lol

OP, where is your idle set? When I first got my GS up and going right the idle was adjusted up a bit (estimation about 2500 rpm) on accident and it was crazy how it wanted to just get out from under me and go. Idle should be 1200 rpm

Idle set is about 1200 rpm maybe a little more

just thinking ... when you next going to use bike... spend a min or so just sitting on with with engine running... twist the throttle only... dont rev the fun bags out of it.. but wind it up to maybe 7 or 8k briefly .. you wont kill it.. get used to the whole big input big rev/ little input little rev thing...

because i had wrist surgery last year .. and had issues in that wrist for a while before that (split cartilage) .. i use one of these to help take some of the pressure off the wrist joint and hand... plus it helps me with gentle input ...

not exactly that one ... and you DO HAVE to get used to it ... they can make the move for the front brake 'interesting' if you dont move your hand properly....

they are not everyone's cup of tea .. some avoid them ... i really do find for cruising along though that it smooths the small power delivery movements needed ...

and at WOT it has rotated down out of the way ..  :thumb:

The thing described in my "Diagnosis Anyone" post is still happening

Janx101

went for a wander through your threads.... that issue (the throttle bogging and fuel smell?) in Diagnosis may well be corrected when you do your carb kit and clean out..

good cleaning salves many woes eh!

I believe I figured out what the smell was.. It was either my crappy clean up job or the stuck carb floats Adidas mentioned. It was allowing fuel to drip into my air box and my air box has a pin sized hole where the fuel was leaking out everywhere and since I cover the bike the smell probably stuck around making the odor much more pungent

Janx101

yup .. fuel vapor contained under a cover in in a garage can get pretty hectic
