Hey everyone, was looking for a full exhaust system to fit my 2012 gs500 however I could only find exhausts to fit up to a 2009 model. Was wondering if one of the many GS boffins on this forum could tell me what exactly the difference is between an early model bike and mine?

I am into buying bikes that people have given up on and fixing them up!

RIP Patrick Lajko, I miss you man.

All the same.

You must not be in the USA if you have a 2012. To get a 2012 here we actually assemble one from scratch. (Which we did today)

Yeah I'm from Australia, we still get 'em new here which is fantastic! That's good news that the exhaust is the same throughout all models. Saw your bike too, built in two weeks! I think a Magnum system would be the go for me as they're locally made and look of top quality. Guess I'll start saving! Thanks for the advice :)

You dont know that Patty P. For all we know a 2012 gs500 could be like this!

P.S I have read good things about the magnum, but they arent made in the US.

Oh also, I work on a farm meaning my bike cops a lot of dust. I'm thinking a drop in filter would be wiser than a lunchbox so as to keep the bulk of the dust away from the filter element, and to eliminate the need for a breather catch can. Am I thinking along the right track or would a full exhaust require me to install a lunchbox filter? I realise I would also have to rejet, as it would run too lean otherwise.

jacob92icu

No need for lunch box filter, your thinking along the right tracks. Riding in dusty areas with an air filter that is directly open to the atmosphere and sucks more air than normal? Bad news bears.

As for the rejet. I would say its really whatever makes you sleep at night. I installed a full Jarding stainless steel exhaust with no rejet, and a stock air filter, have had no issues thus far.

Could you post pictures of your bike? I just want to say I have seen a 2012 gs! :)

So does the 2013 model :thumb:
I am not interested in anything you have to say
Don't bother talking to me, I will not answer you

They didn't change much did they? I guess that's one of the reasons i bought one in the first place. Love the idea of being able to maintain and modify my own bike.

Staintune exhaust .... ?! ... Just a suggestion

Zookmang

I was looking at the staintune exhausts, they are definitely on my enquiry list. They look almost as good as the Magnum, only i believe they might be a bit cheaper?

Janx101

Been awhile since I actually looked at price ... IIRC though you can take a spin down to their little factory in the southern highlands and have one of the chaps check out the bike, ask you questions and suggest the 'best fit' setup for what you want and your budget also!?

Zookmang

Main thing I was after was a full stainless exhaust as they would probably stand up to the weather a bit better than the stock headers would, although i guess i could also get the headers ceramic coated and get a can for her and that would withstand the same abuse? That option would be cheaper too I guess. Prices for a staintune or magnum are around $700aud from what i can find, motad or jardine are a bit cheaper but still costly. decisions decisions..
