There is no "gs500 thing" in regards to the electricity. A good battery is fine. Lights won't dim with brake light.
Things that will cause it:
1. Weak battery
2. Excessive electricity usage due to
    a) too much crap
    b) shorts sopping up power
3. Weak power due to corroded connections
4. Defective regulator

You can upgrade the charging to MosFet. Costs about the same as an OEM regulator - maybe less (like $110).
That and a really good battery and you'll be fine.

 :icon_eek: ahh .. ruling out 1 and 2a .. probably ruling out 3 ... which leaves 2b and 4 ...

have had wiring issues .. but while sorting those out i did have a pretty fair look through the other bits of harness and not having other 'shorting issues' .. pretty much leaves me with 4 .. something to add to the list ..  :icon_rolleyes:

only thought it was a gs500 thing because seen fair few mentions of it last couple years ... assumed it was a common thing... like the optional squeaky rear brake some have ..  :dunno_black:

my bad....

i'll look up how and where to test the regulator with the meter!  :thumb:

Mosfet rocks !!!!!!.
The added bonus if you commute and sit in traffic is it charges better at or around idle!!.

I'm going to chalk mine up to a weak battery since it's been getting worse over time.  I'll be slightly more concerned if I replace the battery and it's still really noticeable.  I'm not going to be replacing my regulator or sorting through all my wiring looking for shorts until I have real issues.  It's not bad right now, just slightly noticeable.

I have the rear brake squeek "feature" too. ;)  Went away for a while with some CRC Brake Quiet on the back of the pads, then came back more quietly after a couple months.

There is one better upgrade than MOSFET... Shindengen SH775.

This is a series regulator... with the standard shunt style regulator, when the battery is charged it shunts excess current to ground, heating up the regulator and stator.

With the series style regulator, it is able to regulate the output in a completely different way I believe that doesn't heat up the stator = longer stator life  :thumb:

I believe these are available from Polaris dealers at around $US75 - 85 or somewhere thereabouts, but not sure of the part number...

Edit: Here is a link to the thread on the GS Resources re: SH775 source...

Both of these regs I believe were used in Honda motorcycles. There is a thread over on GSresources that list's ALL of them so you can find one that fits.

I need some more regulators for upcoming projects so I contacted Joe at RoadsterCycle.com, where I buy MosFet kits.
He says Shindengen  is a real beaitsch to deal with. The 775's are nigh on to impossible to get. Even the FH020AA's are difficult to get.

He added this bit of information:
"I do have the CE605SB that is a series R/R made in the USA in Ohio and I sell tons of those to the 1125c Rotax motor buell guys because it helps to keep the stator running cooler.  There is advantages to them for sure but they are expensive. They are nice for race bikes as the headlights and tail lights are unplugged which actually kills shunt type R/Rs.  The series also have a 2 year manufacturers warranty."

Look for the Polaris branded SH775's... going by that thread on the GS Resources I posted they can be had as cheap as $65 brand spanking new from the dealer.

Today I hopefully fixed the oil weep from my oil filter cover... last service I changed from Castrol GTX Diesel 10w40 to Penrite Every Day Full Synthetic 10w40... but I neglected to change the O ring in the filter cover. I sacrificed some oil and swapped that out today.

Then I adjusted the chain and added a bit of aluminium under the rear mudguard to support the tail light bracket a bit better. The guard's cracked after a brain fart the other week at work resulting in me rear ending the concrete wall  :technical:

Then she got a proper degrease, wash, polish, and wax for the first time in months and a run around the block to pump the tyres up and get the chain warmed up for a lube job.

All set for our big GS Resources/Katana Australia ride tomorrow  :thumb:

Just got done re-tuning the mixture screws after the carb sync (had a nasty carb backfire), and lubing/adjusting the chain to about .875" loaded up. That's down from 2" of play  :icon_eek:. I don't know how nothing bad happened.

Got it registered!

Same!!!  :D

Edit ... And now my bikes ass end is chock full of Katana-ery goodness!! ... Test ride tmw I think!!

Preloaded it to 5 .. Haven't messed with the damper dial yet ... Will work that out with some reading first ..

And back tyre still clears the ground on the centre stand by a couple mm... Just enough to rotate it!

Bounced my ass on the seat though ... It's like a marines blanket now! ... No bouncy spring! ... In comparison the .95 sonics seem to be yo yo all over the place .. But I know they are good...

30 min job by myself ... Well with the Missus rocking the back end for 30 seconds while I put the lower bolt back in anyway!

Looking forward to This!!!!!  :D :thumb:

Awesome Janx!

I put a few hundred km's on with the GSR and Katana Australia crew yesterday... and watched oil leaking out the head gasket again

It didn't get worse though so will check the dipstick again this morning to see how much it's gone down if any...
