So I posted once about something I thought I was missing, but thought that I might as well fully introduce myself.
This is my first street bike, but I rode motocross bikes for about 8 years. I was mostly riding two stroke 125's, but did ride some 250 4 strokes.
This one is a 2004 GS500F with 7628 miles on it. I picked it up for 1200 because the carbs needed rebuilt. And when I say needed rebuilt, they were spitting fuel out of the intake side of the carbs. I took those apart, cleaned them, and redid the floats in them. But, i accidentally stepped on the diaphragm cap breaking one of the vacuum ports off. I wasn't worried until I went to the Suzuki dealer and they told me that you had to buy the entire cap which put me at about 96 bucks :icon_eek:. Right now I'm looking to keep it sort of stock until at least after the winter. I have to fuel two obsessions now, so splitting money between the two is a little bit of a challenge :icon_razz:.
Here's what I started with:

And what it looks like until I get the cap and side fairings put on

Here is a question for everyone too. I got my bike mostly back together except this little drain tube fell out and this is where the bottom of it was. It's not the battery drain or the air box drain, does anyone know what it goes to?

I have some goodies coming in the mail hopefully by the middle of this week so I will post more pictures once I have all of that stuff together.
And my other obsession that I have

I really enjoy reading on this forum and am glad to now own something that I can post about!

it wasn't white and the paint was pretty beat up. It was originally yellow from factory, then the guy painted it silver and laid it down on both sides so the yellow was showing through. I got it, sanded it down, and the plastics weren't worth it to try to leave silver so now flat black.

Good luck mate putting all back together - I can't help with that hose though other then I have a couple too that are tied together with the overflow fuel hose

Janx101

Not certain with the hose... It may be the fuel filler overflow? ... The end up in the bike ... Where does it lead?

04GSFAM

Well I know it's under the airbox and attaches up there some where. The bottom of it was a little oily, but there isn't a clamp on either end.

That hose is probably the gas tank vacuum/vent hose. There will be a little nipple on the bottom of the gas tank, about 2-3" away from the tank petcock, to which it attaches. Either that, or it's the air box vent hose. I wouldn't know too much about that, though. I took my air box out a while ago lol.

I learned the other week that the air box hose has that funny 'duckbill' tip on it ... To help with function of carbs because its between air filter and carbs?? ... Anyway .. Duckbill = airbox ... Battery overflow runs down from behind that vertical frame piece near the battery box (duh to me!) .. So unless its an extremely long replacement hose for some part of the vacuum system then yes it has to connect to the 'lonely' spigot/nipple under the tank I think?

04GSFAM

I'll try to post some more pictures of it later. I must be missing something because I thought another tube connected the that piece.

That hose looks about the right width (difficult to tell by the blurry pic though) for the airbox drain, but the airbox drain is supposed to have a cap type thing like janx describes.  The other hose that goes down to that location is the tank overflow/vent, but its a skinnier tube than that looks in the pic... the tank overflow fits on the nipple under the tank which is about 1/4" ID or so.

It does look 'precurved' so that should be a good clue for being one mentioned thus far.

So I think that that might be right for which one it is, but that raises another question. If you are looking at the carbs from airbox side there is a vent tube that connects to a filter from the airbox side. Then there is a hose behind that is engine side. Where does that hose connect too? I have this drain tube and that one unhooked, and I can't find a diagram for where this goes?? On this diagram it's number 49 I believe. I have the tube from the top diaphragms connected but now I'm not sure where this one goes.  http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Main.2003-current
I took a few more shots with the fairings back on now, still waiting on more packages though.

I'll try to get better pictures of the tube I'm talking about tonight. The ones I tried to take weren't clear enough to tell where they were coming from.

04GSFAM

okay so I got everything put back together and now this is happening...

Anybody know what is going on with it?

04GSFAM

Alright so I think that my problem running is with this hose here. I can't find out where it goes even with my haynes manual. Here are the better pictures of it. I need to correct myself from the other post where I said it was engine side. The hose that is off is on airbox side.

It's the one I'm pointing to

This the size of it

Any help would be awesome. I'm stuck here and really don't want to take it in somewhere to have them tell me it's something simple.

Gs500fmrex

That hose runs over the aibox and is screwed down by the original airfilter and hangs down between air box and battery ,,, vent hose.

04GSFAM

Anyone have any ideas on the video I posted about what's going on with it?

Gs500fmrex

I'm no mechanic sorry it sure doesn't sound good on idle but seems to stop when you ref it a little...lets hope adidasman comes online

04GSFAM

Yea I just really don't want to have to take it in somewhere and it be something simple. It only makes that noise under about 700 rpms. I put a different pair or carburetors in it thinking that was it, and it helped slightly. I just didn't know if anyone else had the same problems and knew what was wrong so I could either have it fixed or do it along withy my trusty Haynes manual.

JAS6377

The proper idle speed for a GS is around 1200. Below that, you're probably going to see odd noises. Unless you meant 7000...

I can't see the video on my phone right now, unfortunately, but if it's happening only at idle, I'd assume it's the pilot circuit. Check the pilot jets and mixture screws, and make sure nothing is clogged. Also, make sure the choke cable is working properly. If it's stuck open a bit, it could make the bike run richer and bog it down a bit.

The carbs were completely clean and the choke is closed. It doesn't really run better with the choke open. Yea it only makes that noise when  it's about it die and I keep it running with throttle. So yea it was 700 haha. It doesn't really bog down until a it starts getting to low in RPMs, and then I don't try to rev it up fast enough. Then once it does it does die it won't start again. I called a place that is going to pick it up on Tuesday unless I can figure it out.
