Hi all, I am a gs500 owner still in high school, and my particular school requires a senior project, I'm not going to go into the details on what this project entails because it is very vague, but i am allowed to use my bike as the main part of the project. I was thinking of modifying the bike to run FI and maybe convert it to dual front disc brakes and maybe a tail swap from a GSXR or SV. These are all great ideas but i have little to no idea on how to accomplish any of these. when it comes to FI what would be the most re latable setup, I've heard SV FI is the way to go, If you have tackled anything similar to these ideas or know where i might find answers or have any other recommendations for modifications please let me know.

Instead of doing fuel injection, which will likely cost way more than the bike is worth, and will probably cause you all sorts of headaches, why don't you just add a filter and exhaust, then document a carb clean/rebuild and rejet it?

Don't get me wrong. I love the ideas, but you may end up in over your head if you're not careful.

I agree: FI isn't as easy as people think. You need a fuel pump, computer system, capable charging system, throttle bodies, etc, etc.....

Dual disc front ends are easy to find, along with a rear wheel / suspension swap. You can upgrade the carbs to VM32's,  digital instrument cluster, swap body work, etc.

But whatever you do, document it here. Plenty of helpful, knowledgeable people to lend a hand.

Would there be an advantage to switching to a round slide carb..? I've heard they're prone to sticking and other issues. Maybe the TM series would be a better option, as it's a flat slide style carb? And would there be an advantage to swapping out carbs?

Sorry for the threadjack, btw...

Anyway, usernamezpd, while awaiting responses from more members, you should definitely check out the rest of the Projects/Builds section. There are quite a few interesting builds going on here that may grab your attention, or give you more ideas.

Round slide carbs just don't rely on the vacuum from the motor for operation (technical types can and will argue this point, but just bear with me here). Basically, when you crack the throttle wide open on stock carbs, you're allowing the slides to go all the way up, and you have to wait until engine rpm's are high enough for the slides to meet up. With mechanical carbs, you open the throttle and those slides are to the roof instantly.

With any of the mechanical carbs I've used, there have been no problems with the slides sticking open. It's possible to install the slides wrong and have them catch so they won't go down, and really dirty slides can catch, but that is it.

Anybody that has swapped CV carbs for mechanical carbs can give a list of pros and cons for each, but I'd save that for another thread.

Fair enough. Thanks for the info! You learn something new every day.
