... nearly ranted this in Jacks 100k thread ... not fair on him! ... so now its here!!...

everyone/each to their own .. always! .. but ... ive heard a lot of 'purple' comments.... not that its a bad oil !! .. but more that its GOOD marketing! ..

i changed my own oil this last time... got a mechanic to do it one time previous when i also had a few other things needed doing.. that i just didnt have time for...

cant remember exactly what oil they said they use... think it was a castrol or shell?? , most likely a 10w40 .. it worked fine ... however .. (and memory can play tricks admittedly) .. even when just serviced .. the gear changes worked fine .. but still felt/sounded a little 'clacky' ... with the 15w40 i did the other week.... "SILKY" !!!! ... quiet ... smooth ... love it!!

i also ride at times fairly heavy on the throttle ... i keep the oil level right (using some various spare 10w40 oil with no friction mods).. most of the time  (was once i had let it get too low  ) ... the service interval was at 18000km .. due to timing/laziness i didnt change the oil till 18800km ... only 800km more... but ...

whether its how i use the bike .. or .. its that critical in kms ... or .. the other oil was just worn out really?? ....... .... even leading up to the 18000km mark ... the shifter was getting twitchy and notchy .. was a bastard to find neutral and click into first when hot .. ... the clutch was ok though (or at least never gave me any noticeable dramas) .. and clutch still is ok .. far as i can tell ..  :dunno_black: .. after the change with the 15w40 (valvoline super diesel, but i dont think that matters so much) .. took about 1km ... and everything just smoothed out and felt better ..

... now .. lacking engineering methods .. or quantifiable test data .. i'm putting it down to fresh oil , heavier oil .. and getting everything 'washed down' with the new oil ... maybe the smoothness of gear change now is some type of initial clutch wear problem?? ..however i dont think so! .. even though this bike is a wet clutch .. ANY time .. ANY clutch is going bad ... you get slippage, hard to change gears overall, jerky or rough power delivery .. etc .. i had a little trouble with neutral and first .. but thats gone now... dont think oil is going to magic a crap clutch away!

before i did change the oil this time... the bike had maybe 4 or 5 different brands of 'leftovers' in it... all either 'JASO' rated OR with no friction modifiers (on the labels anyway)  :dunno_black: ... bike still performed perfectly as far as i can tell .. till the proximity of the service interval .. and i'll use the current 15w40 as a top up for this whole 6000 km interval (if at all possible .. got a 1 litre in the tailbag just to make sure) ..

apart from not having friction modified oils .. or going extreme into high or low numbers for the oil .. i really dont think it matters a damn what oil the gs500 has in it .. so long as it HAS oil in it!!! .. everyone has their own favorites ..  :icon_rolleyes: ... i happen to have a 205litre drum of truck oil !!  :D ... if i could lay hands on a 205ltr drum of a bike specific oil then i might use that  :dunno_black:

i am impressed with the 15w40 'truck' oil though .. its smoother!... if it had made the bike noticeably less rideable i WOULD drain it and use another one!  :thumb:

Banzai

I tend to stay away from Diesel oils in petrol engines. They tend to have higher detergent levels for handling the extra soot of a diesel engine but this can overclean bores etc leading to accelerated wear.
Usually fine for a short time to clean out a gunked up motor but I don't know about using it for a full 6,000km oil change interval.

Of course, Diesel oils may have very different chemistry since I last looked at them and I may now be talking out my ass.
Wherever you may be, there you are.

Janx101

Yeah .. I dunno exactly either banzai ... But it does clearly say on the drum label .. JASO MA in the ratings section ... So  :dunno_black: .. Not that I expect oil companies to tell the truth all the time ... But the rating being on there .. If it was detrimental and could damage stuff .... Oil companies tend to be a bit leery of exposing themselves to risk like that eh!

I am not wound nearly as tight as janx.  That much is clear.

Yeah but my tight is not exactly tight.... It's more like when you over wind a spring and then let all the tension out unchecked..... The you get a tangled steel 'ball' of spring that's hard to figure out and once again tight against itself in many places.... Kinda like high tension steel wool?! ;)

You yanks by definition are would so tight someone trips over and you draw guns

Well you wouldn't want the other person to draw theirs first, now would you? :thumb:
