Funny you should ask.
I ate them as a kid in the 80's but can't remember eating any since. When I first found out Hostess might go chapter 11 a couple of years ago I went out and bought 3 boxes. I told my son (he was 3 or 4 at the time)  he needed to have a Twinkie so he would have the memory of what they taste like. Eventually we ate all three boxes not thinking they would actually go under. He saved the last wrapper so we could open it later and smell the goodness. Then one day I awoke to the news they closed up shop. I went on a 200mile mission on my GS hunting for some Twinkies. My son asked why? I told him I did not want to wind up like Woodie Harrelson in Zombie Land looking for the last Twinkie. Needless to say I came up empty handed after searching every store in a 100 mile radius. Ebay was selling them for upwards of $100 a box. This was about a year ago.

Fast forward to last week. My boy and I went to walmart for some stuff. Low and behold there they where in all their glory. I grabbed 2 boxes. We ripped then open in the parking lot. Grinning from ear to ear we sat there and ate them and life was good.

But, they are no the same. I remember the creme having a more gritty sugar texture. The ones we got a couple years ago and last week have more of a whipped creme filling. They are still good. That being said I will stock up on them so I we will never be without them again...even in the zombie apocalypse.

I wonder if they will still stay fresh for a 100 years like the old ones?

EDIT
I just ate one.
Why are you looking here?

They are very similar.  Some think there is a bit more cream filling than the old ones.  I think they are actually slightly better than the original.

He he he ... this is a standard trick of mine ... toast anything with sugar in it. Toasting a donut, toasting a rasgulla, toasting a twinkie ...
You're talking here of batter dipping and deep frying ... I have had those. I'd eat a twinkie as it is over that, but toasing other similar things is good.

Toasted twinkies are da-bomb.
Put em upside down and toast em till 2 blobs of the filling the size of a thumb appear on top.
Then wait till it cools ... dont seinfeld your face with hot filling.

Cool.

Whichever ... the filling should bubble up and be like a little pebble placed on top ...
The bloody thing has so much sugar it will nicely caramelize ... You can sit it till the entire thing turns brown and it will still be awesome I'll bet.

You dont wanna do that, 6 months it says on the box. And my wife says it did't smell "chemically" ... the girl famously returned a box of pepperidge farm Carrot cake cookies cos they smelled and tasted "chemically"

So maybe some non chemicals found their way into them twinkies.

Besides in australia as soon as it gets there some wombat or some kangaroo will eat it, and go nutso after getting addicted to it and it will be all over the news.

Cool.

He he ... the funnniest thing I heard with the word "chemical" was from my mexican mechanic.
I got him chinese food and I was eatting it with some wasabi. Tiny bits on my fork.
He thought it was some derivative of guacamole. I told him it was hot ... laughed cos I am a well known wuss ... (physical strength yes, I'll happily eat habanero and ask for more) ... and took a fork ful and gulped it ... and went thew ... thew thew ... "what is this chemicals"

hahahahah .. wasAAAAAAbi! ..  :D .. love it!

.. several years ago .. i was on one of my Wasabi 'kicks' .. it goes on in small amounts on nearly every meal! ..

. the youngest daughter was making ham sandwiches for lunch .. (she was about 9 at the time) .. and very proud of her sandwich making skills! .. she asked if i wanted wasabi .. "yeah of course! thanks sweetie" ..

thing is about 9 year olds... they dont understand about 'hot' .. and volume ... so my sandwich gets delivered on a plate with 'specially folded napkin' too!! .. i can smell the tang of wasabi on the air... but didnt pay attention to HOW MUCH tang ... munch munch munch  :icon_eek: .. ermmm.... look at her standing there .. smiling like a sunflower.... gulp ... munch munchmunch .... getting the headsweats now ... swallow... coughcough... 'can i have a glass of milk please darlin' ?" .. off she goes.... look in remaining half of sandwich .. wasabi layered in there like gravy! .. oh my lord!

... i ate every damn bite! .. you just cant disappoint a little face that was that happy!  :icon_rolleyes: ;) :D
