Hey guys, Just picked up a GS500F 06 with only 7k miles on it. Got it from some college kid and i rode it around the block before i bought it and everything sounded pretty decent. About 5-7 miles riding i heard crazy metal on metal noise coming from the engine sounds like bottom end i think. It makes this noise right away from start now too.  I do car work from time to time but dont know much about bike engines. It has tiny scratches and looked like it hasn't been dropped hard. My guess is a bad bearing since it started after i was riding awhile and it got warmed up. This is my first bike so i don't know much yet and don't want to rev it much. . i just wanna rideeeee haha. Hopefully someone has heard this before or if its camshaft play or something. Thanks in advanced guys

What is/was the oil lever like? Fresh oil in it or used oil?

What was wrong with the old oil? Was it low? Easy to spin bearings with low oil

Yea it was low, but i figure id do that with buying any vehicle . My guess is the bearing though don't know enough

Lots of threads here with blown engines due to low oil. I have bought two bikes that way

Yea...who doesnt check oil ....why .......ugh......too bad it sounded mint when i first bought it. New engine time probably?

weedahoe

If you don't mind doing me asking, what did you give for it?

A replacement engine will run probably 500-1000

Loud knocking? I just opened my case and found bad crankpins bearing worn from low oil. PITA to get to, but about $150 in bearings / gaskets / etc. if you're wiling to do the grunt work.

weedahoe

Hope you're going to get your crank turned/cut or at least polished if you're doing bearings.

I only paid 1700 for it but at this point i would have rather gone new. Whats replacing the bearings similar to car wise ( difficulty) cuz ive done engine swaps and a head rebuild...was cool but not sure id do it again haha

weedahoe

Did it make that sounds when you went to go see it and bought it?

As for bearings, its not just bearing you have to worry about. Its all the gaskets, its hoping the crank isnt chewed up, its hoping the cylinders arent cracked, its hoping there isnt any other damage.

After all is said and done, here is a replacement engine on ebay for 600 shipped and is in really good condition. For me, at $600, it isnt worth taking the old out, trying to find all the parts, hoping you have everything and putting it back in.

ah thanks, yea i rode it around the block and everything... sounded like a bike that has 7k miles on it

Jproff89

Also, 07 and 06 model same engine?

cheddle

might sound obvious but have you tried checking the zorst gaskets??? if it has been dropped perhaps they have been daamged and its just an exaughst leak?

Does the sound get worse as it warms up or better? In my experience a spun bearing will worse as it becomes warm and can be "feathered" with light throttle at mid rpm's causing the sound to increase

It's raining so im gonna run it for awhile and figure out if it gets worse as it warms up and do some testing before i buy a new motor

weedahoe

Sounds like a plan. Worse case, pull the engine and tear it apart. There are always replacement engines on ebay

Lemme know if you end up going with a new engine and have a good generator magneto rotor you'd be willing to sell. I may have just trashed mine trying to pull mine off....

Jproff89

Yea, im actually going to rip the farring off and look around see if i can hear better. Then ill see if i can see some metal in the oil after i drain it.
