A Miata is just an MX-5. Why it has a different name in the US to everywhere else in the world is one of life's mysteries.

WIKI says it is Japanese. Challenge says a British car. So however you argue WHAT it is, it wouldn't qualify?
What British sports cars are there other than a Metropolitan or that 3 wheeled thing Mr. Bean drives?

Would a Morgan 3-wheeler qualify?  It is British, but not technically a car.

The DOH classes it as a trike, yet some states have exceptions that allow it to be driven without a motorcycle endorsement; there are even states with variances for their helmet laws.

I consider Morgan 3-wheelers to be cars. They are small, British and do compete against other cars on the racetrack. Not particularly sporting but close enough.

A Reliant Robin definitely doesn't count even though they have also been on Top Gear.

oh piffle!!... the reliant robin was on a shuttle project!! .. it was really REALLY fast ... briefly!!  :D

Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Yeah .. Failed explosive bolt brung it down though.... Woulda been epic if they made it!

Considering Mazda basically designed the miata around a british sports car concept, it's close enough to being british. They even sent engineers from Japan over to Britain.

Wasn't there rumours that Lotus even did final suspension and chasis tweaks on the first MX-5?

But it isn't British and therefore doesn't qualify. If we followed your logic you could also include the Datsun Roadsters, Honda S600/800, Daihatsu Spider and Honda S2000. All of those Japanese cars are arguably better than almost anything the British made but they don't qualify for the challenge.

Mazda bought a Lotus Elan and based a lot of the design ideas for the MX-5/Miata on the Elan.
