Hi there! New to the forum hope u guys can help me out
I own a GS 500 2003 with 47.000km (30.000 miles).
I works perfectly normal, but a few days ago i was forced to ride in massive rain!
First few miles was fine, but then it startet acting weird, like dropping in RPMs even though i didnt adjust the gas. And when i was at lights i had to give it gas or leave the chok a bit on else it would die but even then it could suddnly drop RPM's and then rise again in 1 sec.

It was a very frustating feeling not knowing if u would come home with the bike or with a bus.

Home i came, and nxt day when everything was dry, i tried to start it up, but it wouldn't let me that easy, i had to hold the start button down 5 sec... then pause... 5 sec... and then it startet but the idle was very low! 1,5k rpm with full choke in decent weather, and if i gave gas right away it would die, i had to wait until it was a little warmer.

it can ride "ok" when you ride without stops, but when u stop it can go out even though the bike is warm. The hardest part about this problem is to get the bike startet!

I have riddin it 5 days now, and every day it has become harder and harder to start, i looked in the airbox and lots of fuel was in it. so i cleaned that out, also cleaned the carbs which contained lots of rust dirt from the rain. Also cleaned and oiled the airfilter, but nothing helped.

Anyone got tips?

Check out your spark plug boots. Make sure they are making a good connection to the spark plug, and that all your electrical wires are grounded properly. As far as the air box full of fuel, it sounds like your carbs need some attention. That's normally a sign of sticking floats. Buy rebuild kits for both carbs, and set your float height so the gas level is even with the gasket surface. It's probably getting harder and harder to start and worse to ride because it's running pig rich from those floats being erratic. Pull your plugs, if they are black, then you know it's getting too much fuel

I'll check if the spark plugs sparks good tomorrow and the ground connection.

Is that the kit i should buy 2 of?

I saw the plugs, one cyllinder is fine and one is plain black.

"oiled the airfilter"......is it supposed to be oiled?

Graugaard

uhmmmm isnt it? If not that might be why it is running too rich since it cant drag that much air in cus of the oil then? Im confused  :icon_eek:

What's it made from, cos i'm only aware of foam filters needing oil.

Graugaard

its not a foam, its a standard GS filter, dont know what its called but the material reminds me of the same materiale they use for a  vacuum cleaner bag

Filters don't get oiled. paper filters are dry.
Only a K&N reusable filter gets cleaned and oiled (I think oiled). Those are a dark reddish brown color, not white filter paper.

Graugaard

so could that be why my bike is running weird at the moment?

No doubt.
Your going to require a new paper filter.Probably best if your not familiar with your jetting is to get the genuine(slightly more expensive) Suzi article.

yeah its a really thin oil .. like upper cylinder type thin....

and with foam filters as mentioned by fetor... thats a kind of oil too.. but usually got more 'sticky stuff' in it so it clings better .. for dirtbike type use anyway

:woohoo: well i have orded this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161104335947?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648

Should be the same as OEM, even claims "OEM", hope this will work, if not i will buy the repair kit for my carbs.

The paper filter can be washed in gas and reused.
Oil schmoil, just slosh it in gas - yea try to flow the gas outside to in ... yea right like you can do that ... and dont get too much in the foam in the groove that mates to air box.
Cool.

tried to reuse it after i washed it, and dryed it in my owen 4 hours with 75 C. and it was like new  ;) and it works again!! But... sometimes it says this "Kronk" sound and the revs drops a little and then come back up again, what  could that be?

Graugaard

So i just rode it in the rain again, 12miles, no problem. But the rain wasnt nearly as bad as when the problem came.
So what do u think i should replace? Thinkin about buying new intake seals for carb/engine and airbox/carb + new carb seals cus somehow Heavy rain makes my air filter wet, and therefor the bike runs like shaZam!. + i get water (rust) in my carbs and need to clean them... :(
