Side-stand query, how much weight on it is too much?

I sometimes rest on my bike with the side-stand down, with my feet up and slightly leaning over to the side-stand side. Recently, someone told me that it's not good for the bike and that it may crack/bend whilst I'm still on it. I have seen some riders with pillions with both their feet on the peg and full weight on the side-stand before, didn't think it was an issue.

Was thinking of taking a few funny pics pretending to get my knee down whilst hanging off the bike on the side-stand, but his comments made me think twice about doing that, lest I bring the bike on top of me.

Thoughts?

A convincing knee down shot would need WAY more lean than the side stand.... Don't know about the bike falling on you.. But you might fall off the thing trying!

The stand is for supporting the bike........anything else and you are on your own  :dunno_black:

Yea I know what you mean, I was just trying to make one of those sarcastic "Am I doing it right?" type pictures. I was going to kind of monkey-hang off the side.

I see...out of curiousity, who is the guy in your avatar?

I wouldn't worry too much about body weight reasonably applied.....i bet u could even pivot the bike on the stand & lube the chain,IF that's your thing.

So this is a definite no for hanging off then? "Reasonably"  :woohoo:

I'm only around 75kg.

Excess weight on the stand will cause excess strain on the mounting lug, excess strain will ultimately cause this........

Trying to picture you riding that way.   :icon_lol:  jk

Seriously though, just figuring in my head that 75kg is about 165#.  I've weighed 240-255-230# during my GS riding years and when riding with bike heavily loaded for a trip with stuff piled on passenger seat too I would step up on the peg to swing my leg over to get on.  Folks have done that for years without a problem on many bikes.   I'm past 100k miles on my 02 GS without a broken side stand yet, maybe I'm on borrowed time now.   :dunno_black:
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

This is how I get on my SV when I've got my tail bag on, as my legs are too short to comfortably get on the bike in an y other manner.  I actually worry more about the rider's foot peg when doing that and try to keep my foot as close to the peg mount as possible.  As far as the side stand goes, I guess I better stop doing this:

2008 SV650, Blue, K&N in airbox, otherwise stock

i wouldnt worry too much about stand turns. most are rated to handle a bikes weight. would i do it often? no. but nice to know it could be done if need be.

I you're on hard, level ground and not leaning way off to one side then you shouldn't have any problems with the side stand as the force is mainly inline with the side-stand and the mounting point.  Where I can see problems arising is if you park on soft ground and the stand sinks in or if you're sideways on a slope with the stand on the downhill side; both of these situations would add more of a shear component on the stand mount that makes it more prone to failure.

Ah yes...what I should have said was on the side-stand  O0

Mine was second-hand though, 2004 model, owned for just over 3 months. No idea who or what's been on the bike before, I think I'll take it easy on the stand.

Badot

Sledge, any idea under what conditions that break occurred?

I was always under the impression that on the supersports where they try to shave every possible ounce off not to put any extra load on, but on our more 'utilitarian' bikes we could put some weight on them so long as it's not abused, per se.

Blueknyt

the side stand is designed for one reason only, to hold the bike up at rest unloaded.  This does NOT mean its GVWR or max it is rated to carry with passenger/operator.
