NikonAndy stopped in today at the West Seattle Bike Cave. A lot was done to "Betty".

He already put on the headlight with OEM headlight brackets (brackets from the BikeCave in exchange for some beers), stainless chain guard (from you know where),  bar end mirrors. He as new tires on order and a new/used tank. Rear reflectors go on next time he's here. Tires ordered from our local dealer Aurora Suzuki. They give us 10-15% discount all the time! We support our local dealer and they reward us with discounts and free popcorn.

It feels like Betty already has upgraded springs. Front is pretty firm.

included was:
Rear sprocket
Chain
Rear brake rotor (was very badly worn). Found a much better on on a wheel in the wheel-bone-yard. Rear wheel was off - so why not replace it at the same time?
Front fork reflectors (I wish I remembered who on this board got me hooked on the Harley fork reflectors)
Adjustable front brake lever (his wasn't - as they stopped putting them on bikes in 2004)
Replaced bent rear brake pedal
Replaced left front turn signal
Repaired turn signal wiring
Replaced busted horn
Adjusted clutch cable for better free play and operation.
Cleaned header pipes with Rutland Stove Polish (thank you CenturyGhost for that tip a couple years ago)
Assorted little things like rubber grommets & plastic bolt caps.
Re-routed the new, longer fuel lines above the cross brace to keep them out of the way of the chain.
Cleaned up some carb hoses.
Re-routed many hoses to proper place.

Test rode after all changes/upgrades made and fine tuned clutch lever.

Andy - did I forget anything?

(....and all it cost was some beers!)

Notice how brown and tacky the headers look BEFORE the stove polish was applied.

Applying Rutland Stove Polish to the pipes.

On go the Harley stick-on fork reflectors. Don't those header pipes look fantastic?

A great day for wrenching!

This what the Bike Cave is all about!

NikonAndy

Sounds like you covered it all. Can't think of anything else...

A great day in the Bike Cave indeed! We did a lot to Betty today. Plus I got to ride Frank (I think it was Frank, I'm bad with names) and got a sense of another GS and how similar yet unique each of them are.

Thanks again Adidasguy!!! Looking forward to a little comfortable cruising tomorrow with all our fixes today :)

Joolstacho

Well I fired mine up for the first time today. Sad case it was, bent valves caused by broken timing chain tensioner, been down the road a few times, previous owner a gorilla (threads!)  And he thought it was a good idea to spray it all over (and I mean ALL over) with a few black rattle cans (sigh!)
So I've breathed new life into her. Sounds pretty good but...
Now I guess I'm going to be searching all those carburation threads to get it running like a watch.
Anyway, +1 for me, minus lots for the dickhead PO's who bodged it before I got it.

Hey Joolstacho, I hope that you get it all sorted OK. I just noticed that you are from Greendale. I have been to the pub there with a few mates for lunch. It is a nice area but there was a young local guy on an unregistered dirt bike hooning around the area whilst we were having lunch. The Chicken Parma was ace and the biggest I have ever seen! The chips were brilliant, crisp and dry. I will definitely go there again. Perhaps we can catch up there for lunch one day.  :thumb:

Joolstacho

Prmas, yup -lets do it sometime.
I'm just a minute up the road  -into the forest, from the pub. Pretty classic country pub eh?
There's plenty of good riding 'round here- easy ride out from Melbourne, and the parma's always on at the pub!
My gisser will be going on historic Club reg in 2014 (it gets to be 25 years old), so maybe we can organise something in the new year.

Umm no ... Just a drop in ... And e10 ...

Still no messing about though!  :D

Haha true! Just noticed your reply... I wouldn't be running E10 if I was you!  :dunno_white:

I can't recall the source now but there are almost no Japanse bikes recommended to run E10 in. The true octane rating of E10 fuel is apparently lowered by about 10... the rating on the bowser is not equivalent to the non-E10 variety.

It is not good for our bikes... sorry I can't remember the source but if I find it I will post it...

And on another note I did some chain loving tonight... adjusted and gave it a good clean with kero and a wipe down. Will let that evaporate overnight and have left the tin of lube on the seat so I remember to lube it in the morning before work.

I thought ethanol had a higher octane rating than gas  :dunno_black:

I like those reflectors. Those e-bay finds?

So the octane rating is supposed to indicate resistance to pre-detonation right? That's one figure... there's another figure that indicates energy, and when adding ethanol to fuel that figure goes down.

Typically bikes will have x% *less* power and be x% *less* efficient when using ethanol.

I really want to find this source! Frustrating to be saying this and not be able to show where I read it  :technical:

Found it!!!!!! Yay... Fuel has a MON rating as well as RON... I was a bit wrong... non-ethanol fuel MON is about 10 less, ethanol typically has lower MON. It's no good for carb's or mechanical fuel injection:

Check with adidasguy, he'll probably have the link. I guess they're Harley front reflectors that just stick right on. Reminds me I still owe adidasguy some $ for those....

adidasguy

Go to ebay and search for "harley fork reflector". You'll find them. $12-$15 a pair. Sometimes free shipping. Two styles: round ends and tapered ends.

Are reflectors required in WA?  Would something like reflective tape not suffice?

Reflectors are required by the  DOT. Orange in the front and red in the rear and a reflector in the back.
Any reflective material of the proper color and size would work.

DOT also has requirements for turn signals and lots of other stuff. Some things are required for new vehicles. Some stuff you can change after you buy it and state laws sometimes have their own rules - like whether you need one or two mirrors on a bike.

Check your state laws as to what is required. If traveling around to other states, best to be legal to the max. While you may not get pulled over for missing a reflector, if you do squidly things that get you pulled over, equipment violations just add more cost to your "certificate of merit".

Started cleaning my tank. Shook out the loose stuff first. After I drained the water-fouled gas and the tank dried, it sounded like sand was sloshing around in it. Here's about half of what I was able to shake out before rinsing:

I filled it up with a 50/50 mix of Behr 991 and water. It's going to sit overnight, I'll neutralize it and drain it in the morning.

adidasguy

Carbs are a tricky beast. I want them perfect so I sent 3 sets off to PJ Motorsports for professional cleaning. 89-00 set, 01-02 set and a 2004+ set. They will be re-jetted as well. I think I have a few more sets I'll send off. $75 plus parts for professional cleaning and adjusting. I just don't have time for that with all the other things to do for 3 bike projects (including the Husky bike). Not a bad price so I can concentrate on other things.

Shepa

Bought an gsxr1000 k5 rear shock just for fun.
Pictures upon fitting.

Shouldn't be a problem since I'm using K&N lunchbox, so there's no airbox clearance issues with shock's gas chamber.

It's 5 mms shorter than curent SV650 shock, so it should be a perfect fit.

The spring is a bit stiffer than SV's, so I'll have to sort compression and rebound dumping settings, I hope Dave Moss videos will help.

I also got (pretty cheap) a Fazer 600 front forks with Ohlins progressive  springs and RaceTech valves, but I'm not too eager to swap them yet.

Maybe during winter, I'm in lazy mode right now. O0

Sent from my toilet seat using HTC FartPhone

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes.
A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production.
Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Weeeeeeel in the last month I have:

- fitted a -1 tooth front sproket
- removed K&N restrictor
- "shorty"fied my stock muffler
- repainted exaughst
- rejetted 22.5/60/142.5
- fitted aftermarket 7inch headlight
- fitted a/m wide "dirtbike" bars
- installed heated hand grips
- repaired some drop damage :-) (previous owner!)
- installed a/m GSXR750 pegs

This GS is really starting to feel like "my" bike haha - almost reluctant to sell it once im on my open licence -.-

TheOzTurkish

So today was the big day

D.I.D front and rear sprockets
D.I.D Pro gold chain
Fuel mixture adjustment now running a bit richer
Carb gaskets replaced
Carb boots
Carb synch (left carb at about 1/2 vacuum of the right)
Float height adjusted
Valve's adjusted all 4 were on the tight side
K&N air filter fitted

all in all a very productive day, bike feels completely different now it seems to pull effortlessly..... and its nice to hear no chain slap :D

Shes now part wog with her gold chain, goes well with my Italian missus :P

You can run, but you'll only die tired.
If you hit it with a hammer and it doesn't fix it, you have an electrical problem
