My first drop and slide - centrestand saves the day

So I got my motorcycle licence in March and have been using it as my every day commuter since then - I've put nearly 5000km on it since then.

Anyway this morning I was coming round the last corner on my way to work, i took it a little fast, panicked and focused on the obstacle (traffic island in the middle) and managed to slip out and go for a bit of a slide on my left side. I managed to straighten up enough that I didn't hit the island but I got close enough to it that I slipped on the dirt and gravel that builds up there.

Luckily I never ride without all my gear so I've only got a little bit of gravel rash, but i'll have to get some new bike pants now since they've got some nice little holes in them.

You can see what gear I was wearing in this thread:
http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=64173

Generator Cover got a bit scuffed

Fairing too

Some of the fairing bolts popped out and disappeared

The centrestand lost a fair bit of metal but i'm glad it wasn't the fairings or my leg taking all that weight
you can see the gear selector got scraped a bit too

The kevlar weave in my jeans saved my knee skin

the road rash missed the kevlar patch on my thigh but luckily my wallet saved my leg

and here's a photo of my bike with my friend's ER5 last weekend.

I'm still a bit of a newbie so if you guys have any advice on stuff which i should be checking out after a little drop.
Naturally I'm going to be looking for anything different, leaks etc - I've already noticed the kickstand kill switch doesn't work anymore.

Oh and if anybody in Aus has a second hand engine cover to sell that'd be cool - but i've had a look on ebay already and they don't seem too expensive luckily.

While i'm looking for some new bike pants, i'm looking for something with built in knee pads (like that foam stuff you get in the jacket) so if anybody has got some suggestions I'll check them out.

I suppose this is also a good time for people to share stories of their first time going for a drop.

Sorry to hear mate, I have the same year/colour GS as you, and the yellows are hard to come by. What are you going to do, have insurance cover the damage? If you're in Sydney, metropolitan spares in Silverwater had a wrecking yellow GS with the fairings which seemed in OK condition, they had a few on the upper level, but I didn't take a look. Also, I think Hills Motorcycles had a few wrecking, might want to check with them.

If your fairing bolts came off then it's likely the tiny tabs that the bolts go onto have snapped off, which can be a real pain.

Not sure if the R&G sliders would have saved you here, but adidasguy will know.

Nah I got a quote for insurance but never got around to getting it due to being a poor uni student with no more spare money - considering a claim would cost me about $1100 anyway i'd have to completely total the bike for it to be worth it.

I've actually got a little bit of experience prepping and painting fibreglass from windsurfing (i'd crack a couple boards a year) so I'll probably have a go at filling and painting it up myself.
I got the bike second hand and it had already been on the left side once and cracked the fairing near the front indicator. Now that I've banged it up properly it'll be worth getting out the glassing gear and seeing how neato i can make it.

yeah the first thing i thought was "damn wish i got those frame sliders"
second thing was "glad I was wearing all my gear"

and i'm in central/north QLD, you see a few GS500Fs around but this is the only one i've seen in yellow haha

You & your bike got off relatively intact..........fortunate.  :)

yeah as far as spills go i'm pretty happy i could ride away and first aid was a couple of bandaids

Bad luck mate, happens to the best of us!
All that damage is easily repairable if you want to DIY. E.g I had an alternator cover scraped MUCH worse than yours, a few hours spent filing, wet 'n drying, and polishing has it back to better than new looking. I've left mine polished alloy (tres sexy!) but you might prefer to repaint if you want to match the engine colour. The engine paint might not be cheap.
Fairing damage is easy to fix too.
Beam me up Scottie....

This is completely unrelated to the thread, but codajastal...that quote you have in your signature by Mr. Adams is erroneous, its logic as well as what is implicit in it is fallacious.

Sorry, I just had to say it lol.

Sorry to hear about your crash. Any bike accident has the potential to really injure us, glad you came out ok.

Implicit in Mr. Adams' quote is the notion that stupid people must always without fail only ask stupid questions, which is both vague; by definition, and also is largely subjective.

I only pointed it out in jest, but since you begged for an explanation, I responded.

WTF ARE YOU SMOKING? It had nothing to do with the truth read below you schmo

Dude its a random quote and I couldnt GAF but just to keep you happy I changed it
I didnt require an explanation nor did I "beg" for it. I am quite competent in the English Language but most "normal" people speek proper normal speek as most normal people dont speek big words like see?

Yeah I think it's just the way it came out in the photo

In another note; gee I've been getting more sore all day - hate to think about having a bigger crash or how sore I'd be with out gear  :o

Lol, you seriously have a temper problem. If this is how you respond on-line to a humorous observation, I hate to think how you act towards others in real life. I did not mean to offend you in anyway.

1) I did not in anyway shape or form attack YOU personally, unless of course, Mr. Adams happens to be you and you just took insult without any warrant, as I didn't insult Mr. Adams either.
2) All the words I used were actually part of the English language, believe it or not.
3) I wasn't actually questioning your ability to speak English, so I'm not sure why you feel the need to defend yourself in this manner.
4) In your attempt to portray your "competency", you've managed to misspell "speak", the word is not "speek". You also do not capitalise "language", it is simply: English language.

5) The words I used were not "big", use Google define: - it may help.

Cheerio.

To the OP, please forgive me. I will depart from this thread.

Yeah I'm lucky, I've had more gravel rash falling off a pushy. I was surprised at how much skin you lose even through the jacket though. The real pain is the bruising from my wallet and on my knee haha

Imagine that.. An Aussie not sticking to strictly on topic stuff! ... Well I never!! ...  :icon_rolleyes:

Well spotted rainman!  :icon_rolleyes:

... Anyway... Very glad to hear you are relatively unscathed T'Booger ! ... Gear safety for the win!

And don't worry mate... As you undoubtedly have divined by now this particular forum contains many personages of knowledge and experience that indubitably will exercise their particular field of expertise to assist you in the repair of your illustrious yellow machine and perhaps some jocular stories of similar mishaps of their own along the path of their career of riding two wheeled conveyances along many roads and byways around the globe.... All this to restore your faith in riding and furthermore your belief in the brotherhood and camaraderie of motorcycling pursuits!

:D .. All without the help of online references of any type!

Heads up, Codsie boy. Thursday is my slack day at the old institution of learning and I spent a fascinating hour with one of our psychologists, roaming the codajastal post history, and having a bit of a natter as to what your ramblings reveal to a trained mind. Buddy boy, she was not happy at what she saw. But, as we know you are easily bored with things, we won't labour you with her reservations and concerns. Just accept that they do exist, eh? In spades, actually. Anyway, off you go and do have a superdooper weekend.

PS

I'll send you a postcard from Maggies Fish 'n Chips when I get over to Whitby. That'ed be real nice for ya, wouldn't it. Ya could pop it up on the sideboard in the front room.
