steering head bearings replacement?

Hey guys, I've been hearing a soft, muted kind of pop or click when I use my front brake, often from a stop after I've just pulled up a few feet and am stopping again. This is the only bike I've owned and it's always been this way, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I swear I also notice a little wobble on higher speed turns. I can't tell if I'm just unsteady or if the steering head bearings need replacement. Sounds like that's what it is from some old posts I've read, but wanted to get the group's thoughts.

Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, bike is a 1994 with about 12k miles (and almost as many previous owners from what I can tell).
Fix it until it's broke.

Neck bearings will feel notchy or have a flat spot and in 1 spot it will sort of feel like it "drops in" in steering.
Brake noise, likely is brake.
Cool.

Check all bolts for tightness.
Sometimes the floating front rotor makes a snapping sound as it shifts position when braking in reverse then forward - as when moving around a parking lot.

If you have steering neck bearing problem you deffinately will feel that. I had to replace mine on a Bmer. Handling was scary bad, notchcy and it felt like it got stuck in turns. When I first got that bike i alsmost returned it. In 8 years they had never been serviced at the dealrship but it was checked off.

Got the weight off the front wheel. Grab the forks and pull/push them towards and away from the engine. Any wear or looseness in the bearings will be obvious as will wear in the fork bushes.

There's a looseness between the rotor and the hub on the semi floating GS front rotor causing that clicking noise when going back and forth braking at parking speeds.  Just grab the rotor with your hands and twist it back and forth and you can feel and hear it.  It's harmless.

I'm always surprised when I hear of steering head brg problems on the GS which comes with good taper roller brgs.  Had to change them in 2 of the 4 old Hondas I had, they were like loose ball bicycle bearings.  Easiest way to check them is to put the bike on the ctr stand and grab the rear grab handle with one hand and the left handlebar grip with the other and bounce it up and down on the front tire.  You will feel and hear the looseness in the head brgs if any.  Also holding the front wheel off the ground and move the steering slowly back and forth thru the center position to see if you can feel an indent in the bearings.  Not too likely to be bad with taper rollers but most likely to happen with old low mileage bikes that have sat around with the grease drying out and no longer lubricating the bearings.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

I have seen far more headstock bearings killed by pressure washers than have died of natural causes  :thumb:

Guys, thanks a million for all the replies. It's definitely not notched but I'll get the front wheel up and see if there's any play. Didn't know about the floating caliper but that's probably the noise I'm hearing.
Fix it until it's broke.
