What kind of RPM's do you guys hit at about 70 mph?

I'm still in the break-in period on my GS500 (stay under 5000 rpm the sales guy told me), and I'm wondering what kind of speed I'll hit at 5k rpm in 6th gear... If I can only hit 50 mph then I won't be able to hit the freeway for a while... any suggestions as to how to get those miles in quicker?

Thanks.

I think I go approximately five grand at 65 on the speedo. I remember when I was breaking mine in I had to stay at about 55 to keep it below 5k. You should vary the speed as well, you won't really get to do any highway driving, just stick to back roads and vary your speed for the first 500 miles. That's what I was told, that's what I did, now my bike has 1400 miles on it and it runs great.

Thanks for the info, I guess the side benefit will be getting used to the stop and go, shifting and starting from stop of side street traffic!!

The freeway will have to wait... but just for a little while...

Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.
Ride Hard...or go home.

Its you Vs the pavement.....who wins today?

personally i believe that having a new bike when you start out is great, because it requires that break-in period.  it stops you from accelerating too quickly, and going too fast, because if you do, you'll wreck your bike.  i had to hold on on the freeway too for a while, but, it's worth the wait.  good luck with it.

Frankly, I'd rather hit the freeway during the break in period than to subject the engine to the overheating of stop and go traffic (if there is a lot of stop).

5000 rpm in 6th should take you to exactly 60 mph

I agree, in 6th I'm about 1,000 rpm below the speed.  4,000=50, 5,000=60, 6,000=70, 7,000=80.
