My bike was painted black by the PO, but I'd like to remove it because they painted right over the decals.  You can see the ridges of them under the paint. I'd like to see what color it was originally but am not sure what kind of paint was used.

You won't be able to remove it, and keep that underlying color. So, since you want it repainted anyway, just grab some light grit sandpaper and sand it until you get to something other than black. Best bet is to sand where the decals are, and then peel one up to look under it.

probably the easiest would be to use a razor blade and trace the edge of a decal; then you should be able to lift a corner of the decal and peel it off.

That said, before re-painting you will want to remove all the decals and sand down the ridges from the PO's paint job.

Sounds like the PO only masked then painted.Find a place(probably under the tank) and see the original frame color.Big job to bring everything back to original.

After a short stint of boredom and carb cleaner I found the original decals are intact and the bike was originally yellow.And the original paint on the tank is still in pretty good condition. Just need something a little stronger than the carb cleaner and paper towel lol. Looks like the PO just rattle canned right over the clear coat.

In that case, if the clear is still intact, then its possible with a little patience you could use mineral spirits and a rag to get most of the paint off. May still want to buff and touch it up after.

That would work on the plastics also?

Anyone have any ideas for a dent removal on the top of the tank?

If you didn't have a dent to deal with, I would use 1500 grit paper and a fine polishing compound. I took a piece of a auto strut rod amd made a dent removal tool but it would still need filler work to look perfect. I posted on an earlier thread about fixing the dent in the tank on my 89, before and after pics.

Mines near the top and pretty flat so I'm hoping it doesn't end up like that and pops right out.
