New here.  Just purchased a 02.  Will use for a lot of around town trips besides some runs to the mountains (I live in NC).

Sure would be handy to have some type of package rack on the back.  Did a search and can't find anything.  Can anyone direct me to a picture of a GS with a package rack or is there anywhere I can purchase one?

Search instead for luggage rack .... But don't sit too close to the screen ... The search hits might overflow out the screen!   

I made my own for my 97 and bought a Suzuki rack that required bracing for a hard bag for my 02 that's no longer available:

There's a couple others mostly for hard bags that I can't think of at the moment.  The Suzuki rack I bought 10 years ago for my 02 for about $40 was a bargain if you can find one on ebay:

Remember that 2001 to present are the same rear end. Not much really listed for 2001 or 2002 but if you look 2004+ you probably will find more.

I'm O.K. with a used rack.  Nothing on Ebay at the moment but I'll keep looking.

So few people ever put a rack of any sort on their GS500 it's unlikely you will find a used one, but if there's one out there chances are someone on this forum knows about it. A couple of years back there was a guy in my area that had a Ventura rack for sale....forever.

I have the ventura rack, with bag and all. Was an easy bolt on. It is gathering dust in the shed now, although i am in Australia, would probably be easier buying new by the time shipping costs add up.

Have you decided on soft vs hard luggage? I had a givi rack with an E45 case on it (thanks again Patrick) and loved it. I guess it really comes down to whether or not you think you need to lock it.
