So this has been driving me nuts, as you can see if my pictures that I post there is a lip at the end of the grip tube that keeps the grip from covering it. Are all GS500Fs like this or is it just some thing that wasn't done right or what?  I was thinking of just hacking it off with the dremel? The bar end weights don't cover it, I really don't know whats stock and whats not at this point.

Twisted

Mine shows too. But not as much as yours. Some black permanent marker might fix it.

I always thought that.was a lip to match the raised bit at the end of the grip rubber... help keep it stretched out kinda thing?

Never seen that before.
Normally there is a flange at the switchgear end that keeps the grip a few mm out. If the flange has been cut away (eg to fit heated grips) your grip could go too far along the throttle tube.
Wherever you may be, there you are.

I've never removed the grip but god only knows what the PO did.

I think your grip and throttle tube are both original. Put a pic with the part near the switch assy shown up closer ... but that grip looks original.
If you dont like it, and that plastic bothers you on the outer end, do no ever switch to an aftermarket grip. They leave visible plastic on the switch end ... way worse if you ask me - but no one ever does so ...
The only better option for that grip IMHO is a 89-96 katana grip complete with throttle tube and the left side cos the pattern doesn't match the GS grip, but the kat grip is nice and thick and cushiony ... my hands are bigger and I like that kat grips a lot more I think. The GS grip seems like gripping the bar with electrical tape on it ...
Cool.

I had the exact same issue. You WANT that bit of plastic there because otherwise the rubber on the grip will rub against the bar-end and may not always rotate. I guess Suzuki sees it as a possible safety issue.

That being said, when I installed new grips, I had to file/cut down the lip because I had no other way to get the new grips on. I ended up sort of friction-fitting the new grips on the throttle tube so there is a smaller gap between it and the bar-end.

Wd40 or crc or similar in the rubber grip before you slide it on. .. works well!

Janx101,

I gotta ask so after you use WD-40 or a lube of your choice, how do you glue the grips on there?

When we changed grips on my scooter years ago, we used hair spray... Nice and slippery when you're putting it on, and good luck removing it when it dries out :icon_lol:

Ride it like a 2 stroke:
1: Rev high
2: Add oil
3: Repeat

robfriedenberger

Yeah, hairspray and grip glue work like that.

glue? .. there is no glue ... it goes dry! ..

i didnt drown the things in wd/lube spray .. just a little misty squirt .. leave the bars in the sun for a little bit afterwards... it works ok for me!
