So I started the tear down on my carbs so I could clean, re-jet and rebuild them when I noticed that the left side (looking at bike from rear) carb had some type of build-up in it.
Here are both bowls showing how dirty they are. A good cleaning is definitely in order.


Here are pics of the build-up I am talking about. That black area inside is so old that I can not just wipe it off with my finger. I have not tried yet to hit it with mineral spirits to try and clean it that way.



The build-up really showed up on top of the jets. Here is a pic of the jets. Notice how one is a lot darker than the other. That dark one has a build-up on it that reminds me of welding slag. It is tough and I can not wipe it off with my finger. It is on there pretty good.


Any ideas on what this is and/or what may have caused it?

Varnish from old gas sitting in there  for a longtime.
Clean them up with carb cleaner or any number of other ways. Lots of posts on cleaning carbs and the WIKI.

It might be a good idea to a look at your tank with a flash light as well. If its rusted than you should seal it.

Thanks. That makes me breath a little easier. I was nervous that someone was going to tell me that it was a sign of some really bad something-or-other.

Yeah, it is kind of bad. I have already bought a 3-part Kreem kit. But since I have not opened it yet I am thinking about returning it and getting a POR-15 kit instead since I have read some really good things about it versus the Kreem kit.

I've done 2 tanks with POR-15 and the results were stellar! Two things that seem to get people is the "rolling" the tank for 20 minutes at a time and getting the tank perfectly dry before the final coating. For the rolling, I just did it even went a little longer than the 20 minutes. What an arm workout! And to get it good and dry I got a hair dryer at the Goodwill store for 3 bucks, rigged it to blow into the tank with a coat hanger and some tape and let it blow for a couple of hours. Worth every minute and every penny in my opinion. Good luck with yours!

I've used both the kreem kit, eastwood kit, and the por-15.

It gos in the order alright .......better......BEST

Kreem kit worked, I wasn't happy with the way it held up, so I tried the east wood kit and it required 6 or 7 steps between washes, however it lasted and worked great. THe por kit was awesome, easy to use, quick even though i dragged it out, and it lasted.

Well, I returned the Kreem and was going to buy the por-15. But I was told about another product called KBS Coatings. So I jumped online and started doing some research.
I ended up ordering the KBS kit. It should be here in a couple of days.
