Does anyone have one of the short 01-02 bar ends floating around?  I've seen plenty of the longer ones from the F's on fleabay, but I don't want to stick those huge things on my bike.  If it comes down to it, I really only need one.

All GS500 bar ends are the same size.
If you want short ones, you are after some after-market bar ends.

Are you sure?  They have different part numbers, and I've seen multiple pics of 01-02 GS500's that have the same size bar ends I have, which are significantly shorter than the 04+ bar ends.

All the same size.
They did have lead with a steel cover. Then all steel.
Also a different part depending on whether on bars with nuts welded in or plain tubular bars.
The bar end is the same size. Mountings may be different and material it is made from may be different.
Shorter bar ends were used on other Suzuki bikes and they are compatible.
