See?
First is the bolt head, which you say is the castle nut.
Second picture is the other side with the castle nut.
Were you trying to take off the wrong end?

FYI: The bolt can go in either way, but the correct way is for the nut on the left so it is easier to access.

FYI #2: The bolt head looks deceptively like a nut & washer.

you know what, that's exactly what it is, i was thinking the bolt head was a nut and washer. i was expecting the bolt to be on the the left side because getting my drill on the right side would have been difficult to do.

I got the bolt to turn, did I ruin the actual nut in the process?  :technical:

finally got it off, took the blow torch to it again, tried tightening/reversing with the gun, god damn- it was one difficult task.

I did it though, here's a picture of the 17mm nut

so now I've gotten the basics done to the bike, time to really dig into what I had in mind. replacing the chain, sprockets, the rear tire, new exhaust (as mine has a huge hole in it) and leds in the gauges

I agree, if that's not the bolt head something isn't right. Also, looks like your chain has seen better days.

Someone has reversed the axle direction. No big deal i guess but to me it's easier having the 22mm removeable nut on the left side.
I'v ordered the minimum 4 of these,M16 X 1.5 pitch in stainless,so if anyone wants one in Oz let me know.

It seems that the OP was trying to loosen by turning the BOLT....(17MM)

Although this might work, it is more normal / standard, that when you have a long bolt, that you loosen by holding the bolt fast with the 17MM, and turning the NUT loose with the 22MM.

.. walt! it's the castle nut without a cotter pin

Wonder is there WAS a cotter pin, but it finally gave after 100 times the effort it might normally receive  :icon_lol:

lol! oh man.....

Blueknyt

that is the head of the axle, the other end should be the nut with pin through it, thats the end you turn, this end just gets held when tightening
