When I start my 1997 GS500e up to let it warm up the rpm are where they should be but when I take it off the side stand and stand it straight up as if I was about to take off and ride the rpm shoot up to about 8000 and stay there for some reason. Can anyone tell me why that is. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When it is on the side-stand is your handlebars turned towards the left?
I ask this because you may have a very tight throttle cable that is opening your throttle up as you turn your bars straight.
Try turning your handlebars straight, and maybe a little to the right WITHOUT standing it straight up off the side-stand. If the RPMs still shoot up. then I would look at your throttle cable and either loosen it up at one end, and/or make sure it is not caught on something or routed the wrong way.

I always turn my handlebars to the left when I park it. I start it up while the handlebars are still to the left. That might just be the issue. I will adjust the throttle cable and see if that takes of the issue. Thank you
