Something pneumatic?

Looks like the inside of a switch/solenoid to me.

It sort of hold/retains something.

Is it for the jaws of snap-ring pliers?
I used to have a set where you took the jaws off and put them on a different way to convert them from internal to external.

Or used for the lock latch to hold springed tools closed, like said snap-ring pliers?

It's a pin for the stop-arm on a door.

Like on a large door that would open vertically rather than horizontally, it would have a hinge at the bottom and near the top along the inside would be an arm with a track in it.  Arm is attached to the door, slides on the pin, pin is in the cabinet, door can only open as far as the track can slide on the pin.
