I've done the rear brake pads but I can't get this pin that holds the front brake pads on the caliper. Help

It can be a bit tricky. Make sure the pads are seated properly and give them a little pressure towards the spring while pushing the pin in.

The pin only goes in one way as well so make sure it's the right way!

I've done a lot of splashing thru the winter salt water on my GSs and that pin frequently was corroded in place and couldn't be removed without a lot of heating with propane torch.  If you can't turn it it's going be difficult to pull out.

Also if your trying to get it out and not in there's a small clip towards the head of the pin keeping it in place. Make sure you remove that first

regarding the brakes: When I brake everything is fine until the very end, when I get to 5-10mph. Then the rear brake starts to squeak. The front one not as much, but it does sometimes, too. The braking power is fine, I can lock both wheels if I want to, braking is smooth, nothing jams etc...
It just when I stop at the red light and there is the squeak I get unwanted attention from everybody around. I'm afraid that one day an overzealous cop will take me aside and give me a ticket for unsafe driving, thinking that the squeaking comes from between the tire and road, not from the brake...

disks look fine, not sure about the pads. brake fluid level is fine, too.

any hints on what it could be?

90% of squeezing from the front is caused b the friction material, the other ten is dirty guide pins. The only way I can keep my rear from squeaking is to clean it every chain adjustment.

No cop in there right mind will pull you over for squeaky brakes the noise is not mistakable!

That's the infamous GS500 rear brake squeal... Nothing wrong, other than the annoying sound.  Mine has had it before, along with countless other GS500s as well.  It's one of their nuances I guess. There is this stuff called anti-brake squeal, or moly paste is another I think, (the key ingredient for this application being molybdenum disulphide or graphite) in which you apply to the back of the brake pad and it gets rid of this noise. You can get it at your local dealer or auto parts stores.  I've seen it at the counter at Napa in little ketchup-like packets - some folks on here have mentioned some auto repairs have just given them some too.

Don't know if it's as safe, but copper grease on the back of the pad works a treat.

FWIW, Haynes and shop manual both call for copper grease on the back only. Do not let any grease get on the front or sides of the pads!

It seems it has become necessary to qualify my posts:
I am/am not trying to start an argument. This post is/is not intended to be a personal attack. I am/am not merely attempting to present a different viewpoint.

Select the words that apply to you.

Don't like the idea of grease near the pads at all, usually a good cleaning works great

I'll check the pins and try to get the grease on the BACK :)

I lost my faith in cops after I got a ticket in Tahoe 2 years ago. It was 50 degrees, the road was dry as pepper but the 'Chain control' sign was on. I was driving my little honda Fit with friends, saw the sign, shook my shoulders and kept going, like everybody else. This cop was a mile down the road. Stopped about 20 cars, including mine, everybody got a $225 ticket. And we all had to put chains on. Chains fell apart in a few miles and messed up my fenders. I went to court 2 months later, the judge didn't care about the pictures I took saying that I could've taken them on some other day and the cop must be right because none of the other 19 drivers came to complain... So I paid the ticket and was mad at myself for taking a day off from work and wasting it, and driving 400 miles for nothing...

My dad was a cop himself - and I know they ain't all stupid. But many of them are. And you can't win with them. I'd rather avoid the squeaking.
(BTW - my wife freaks out each time she hears it)

Update: I got the pads on and topped off my brake fluid but now my rear brakes squeak a bit loud when stopping

The GS is notorious for a little rear break squeakage. New pads wont feel very grippy compared to your old pads, this is because you need to wear them to the disc, called beading your breaks in or something rather. The squeak could go away after they are worn in, or it could stay. Also could be some debris in there, check to see if there is something in between the pads and the disk, and clean the disc with some brake parts cleaner.
I am into buying bikes that people have given up on and fixing them up!

RIP Patrick Lajko, I miss you man.
