LED turn signal indicator

Hi guys

I bet somebody encountered this before. I got those tiny little light bulbs for 4 indicator lights: oil pressure, neutral, turn signal, high beam.
I got some cheapies here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007G67JCS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Out of 10 only one came in bad.

Anyway - if you connect them right - they're really bright. If you reverse the polarity - nothing happens.

My problem with the turn signal indicator is that the bulb either shows one signal or the other, depending how I put it in. In plain English:
- I put the light bulb in one way - it doesn't light up when I switch left turn on
                                                   - it doesn't light up when I have the blinkers off
                                                   - it indicates correctly the right turn
- I put the light bulb in the opposite way - it indicates correctly the left turn
                                                   - it doesn't light up when I have the blinkers off
                                                   - it doesn't light up when I switch the right turn on

Is there any simple solution to this? for now I put the old bulb back in, but it's terribly faint compared to the LEDs.

Based on the way the turn signals are wired, if current flows one way through the bulb the left flashers also light. When the current is reversed, the right flashers light. The bulb will flash either way.

To correct, either find yourself a bi polarized led, which I think can be found to fit older gs500s. Alternatively, search for the led diode fix and "correct" the wiring to allow an led to be used in place of the indicator bulb.

Edit: found it for you

yeah, I guessed that was the reason (switching of the polarity). Seems like the diode solution should work. I'm just a little scared that the guy who tried that - got his bike sort of fried. It's not obvious from that thread whether or not he got it resolved in the end...

It works. I've done it, as have many others here using only the diagram I linked you to. They guy who wrote that post knew what he was doing and talking about.

The indicator harness is quite easily removed so you can take it to the comfort of your workbench to cut, splice and solder.

If you don't have one already, get yourself a Haynes manual. There are full color wiring diagrams for every model year. That should minimize the damage you can do. ;)

I have exchanged some messages with Adidasguy (RIP), I would assume he was right. Just the thread was not very conclusive about what the other guy did wrong...

I got Haynes manual within a week of buying the bike :) helped me a lot a few times

I guess my first ride tomorrow will be towards Radioshack :) Any particular diodes you would recommend?

yep works. i did this last weekend. i had only one hiccup and that was because i didnt know diodes are directional.  i used the 1n4001 diode from radio shack. 1.60 for two of them.

I'm too busy this weekend and the next few days. Ordered 100 of them for $2.29 from Amazon :) They might come in handy later...

solder up a 50 wiring harness adapters and sell them for 5 bucks with free shipping.  :whisper:
