When I walked out my house today I looked at these 2 particular trees ( my wind indicators ) and noticed they were being blown pretty bad.
Was almost tempted not to ride due to the highway would be extremely windy. After warming up my kat and checking the wind speeds on my weather app (approx. 40mph with 60 gusts) I started towards the highway. On the highway I was splitting traffic slower than usual and being more cautious of vehicles around me waiting for gaps instead of splitting 2 cars side by side. Then a cross wind hit me and decided to take me from the far left lane over a lane while a car was merging into said lane, using my foot against the door to stop the bike from making contact I pushed off the car door and decided to pull over and let my heart slow down and pull the seat from my kungfu butt grip. the lady pulled over aswell and made sure I was ok and we checked the car door, size 9.5 boot mark there, and continued on our way.

Man, you had some cohones to ride with 60mph gusts.  The worst I've had in my very limited time was maybe 20-30mph (just a ballpark guess) coming from a wooded section of road to where there was an open field on my left.  Blew me across my lane, and I was leaning quite a bit to stay straight.

Hah, reminded me of this crazy video of some insane Russian guy lane splitting at like 90+ popping wheelies and stuff.

Wonder what was going through that guy's head when he thought it was a good idea to open his door in the middle of traffic...?

Wind can catch you off guard. I can really feel it push me around on my GS. But, on my Honda weighing 100lbs more not as much.

1. Lane splitting, although accepted in some parts of the world , is a sure fire way to end your day badly. It's just a bad idea for obvious reasons. Sit in traffic and be patient like everyone else. 2. A GS500 and lane splitting??? like jumbo shrimp or original copy.....is an oxymoron.

I'm not sure that he meant that he was lane splitting, just that he wasn't using the middle lane while there was a car in the two lanes alongside.  Kensully, please clarify.

There is no way I would lane split on a highway, or really anywhere else for that matter...unless someone's life depended on it.

ok not really splitting two cars side byside but when there is a gap of a car space or 2 open i'll shift over and speed up and around the next car. that was today, when its windy I don't split but on a calm day with traffic about 25mph I do split 2 cars side by side.

To clarify, I'm pretty sure Ken is from California, where splitting is legal.

Yes I'm in cali and out here most riders do it, save the big baggers, the ride home wasn't to bad, 15mph wind with 30 gusts, typical day around here. Where I live e have three major wind channels from the coast that merge to one, it gets pretty hairy at times. I know there are a few riders I'm the vallejo, Benicia area, ask them about 680 to 80. Few times heading out to Travis air force base I was in a constant lean the majority of that strip
