Really appreciate it Bboy! I was starting to really stress as the date closed in. Luckily we have a couple gs'ers around that will be able to meet Jester.

Slack - That's my fear.. Would hate to hold up the whole planned trek with a malfunctioning bike.

Bike only has 127 miles on the clock, and my floats were shipped out from TX yesterday. Just guessing, but I say the parts will be in Friday. Which means finishing, hoping it runs well, risk riding in WV w/o proper time to break engine and tires in, double check all torque settings, and all that good jazz. Hoping they come in tomorrow, which will leave friday to test/tune.

All in all though, this has spurred me onto actually making some progress on the project. I too think she's come out looking really sharp. After the chin fairing and paint it will be a dream come true.

If i don't make it this weekend, hopefully I will be able to touch the baton maybe on its way north or heading back south.
gotta love staring @piles of parts & seeing the end in sight Eh?

It really is a great feeling, took me long enough though!! I got to take a chilly mountain pass run last night after work, such a great feeling :woohoo:

Snowing this morning so I left her in the shop until lunch. Can't wait to finish up a few more small things and then ride the tar off those wheels!

Just some ramblings;
Been fighting a backfire through my left carb. See this thread for better explanation. Tried going from 2.5 turns to 3 turns out on the mixer screws. Nothing.. So I gave up until I can get more shop time to pop the carb, inspect, and do another carb sync.

Then read a thread a while back where the owner saw better fuel economy with lower octane level. My gs has usually averaged 45-55mpg depending on style riding. I figured I'd give the lower octane theory a shot. With only a handful of miles I can't say anything on fuel economy, BUT the bike seams to be idling better and I haven't heard any backfires through the carb yet.

I'll be taking some longer treks this summer so I plan to put her under the microscope and make sure she's running healthy. I did buy a couple little gadgets that will make my longer rides more enjoyable. Got a CrampBuster and a throttle assist/cruise control.

Have another look at your cam timing.
We have found sometimes it can be off by 1 tooth. Things look right, but when the tensioner is tight and the engine rotates a few times, the cams are actually backwards by 1 tooth.
We then rotate the cams forward 1 tooth and all is perfect.
The symptoms were some backfiring through the carbs and hanging idle when the motor gets hot.
You see, normally the cam chain is not tight when you insert and check the cams. After everything gets tight, most of the slack gets taken up on the back side thus rotating the cams backwards a little, ending up 1 tooth off.

Whoa.. missed this reply by the main man himself :sad:

Pat, you were such an amazing individual. Never wavering from what made you happy. One of your characteristics I want to adopt is your unconditional willingness to help others. Even my noobish questions didn't phase you. All verbal language is weak in the attempt to describe the impact you had on all of us, and many others. So I will rev my GS, to celebrate yer life and the joy of having the chance to get to know you through these parallel twins. May you smile down on all the friends and family. We will have a group ride again one day my friend!! :cry: :angel:

Gabby got new fuel lines over the weekend. Decided to pull and clean the lunchbox filter as well. Gave the slides a test push.. my right slide went maybe 2/3's and then hit a stop on something. Pulled the carb top and the needle plug had come unseated and wasn't holding the needle down firmly. Fixed that, both slides fully functional now. Cleaned and relubed my lunchbox filter. She started right up and sounded much more healthy. Only 1 or 2 burps/backfire through the carb all weekend. Didn't do another carb sync, but will next when I swap the oil/filter again.

Rode her for about 5 hours over the weekend. Rode with my friend back to his place in Lewisburg WV, then back to my home. Had a great ride up with him(he's riding his new Yama Bolt), through some new back road's I've never ridden. Then a nice solo ride home through the regular back roads we drive every weekend to our ski resort. I did ride with an old honda sport(I think it was an old honda cx turbo) for about half an hour, before we stopped, chatted for a minute, then split off in different directions. Gabby ran great, the new throttle aids I got are worth their weight in gold!

Was having too much fun riding, here's the only photo I snapped(of course it was for a failed photo challenge);

Ride safe my brother and sisters.

The damn bike is better than ever!! So she's been running OK, idle hasn't been the best(kept dipping lower after I would adjust the idle screw), also felt chunky on idle/low throttle, lots of pops on decel, and that annoying nasty hiccup/backfire through the carb at idle/low throttle. I still felt that there was something off, wanted to say it felt like the vacuum system was amiss, but I didn't feel like I knew enough to make that guess. Kept reading and digging.

Then yesterday I was starting the engine to warm the oil for a change, since I rarely have my helmet off when starting the bike I was listening for anything out of the norm. I hear a pft pft pft of air perfectly in sync with my idle speed. The sound was very evident right near where my jardine pipe slips together. I immediately thought, "Damn that's a heavy ex leak to hear it that clearly." Searched around and found the noise was actually coming from a hose off my carb. :mad: I've looked at too many hose routing diagrams when removing the PAIR system and getting the vac lines hooked up correctly. Grabbed the hose and plugged the end with my finger for shits and giggles. Idle leveled out, and popping immediately ceased! After another handful searches, using old gstwins threads, as well as part fiche diagrams. My conclusion was I had the purge hose from the lower T on carbs hooked up to my vacuum inlet on the frame petcock. Then the vac line that should've been hooked into the petcock vented straight to the atmosphere(not connected to anything)

After finding the correct diagrams it was a quick and easy fix. Swapped the hoses over, turn the fuel back on and test fired. It hiccuped 1(ONE), one single time, then leveled out and hasn't had a SINGLE pop since. Took her for a quick ride to warm up the oil for a change. She ran so so damn good! In every way and in every rev range she was smoother and just felt healthier. Got the oil/filter swapped out and called it a night. Just a few more things before we take our 6 hour trek to the beach for Bike week.

Now with my slides and vac lines fixed, I'm hoping to get more than the measly 43mpg's I was getting so far this summer. No photos, but I'll have some soon with the thousands of bikes at bike week

Well the time has come :cry:

I enjoy riding them, but I really cut my teeth on buying projects, finding parts, and rebuilding. So I have sold Gabby last night to her new happy owner. He couldn't be more pleased on how she looks and rides. I pushed him in the gstwins direction, but not sure if we'll see him surface here. Didn't even take a good photo before dropping her off.. It has been one of my favorite builds to date and I'll always miss the old girl.

Ride safe my twinners!

ps. Already have my eye on my next build.. Scratched up a local Suzuki GT550 Indy(3 cylinder / 2 smoker). Should have it home and in the shop asap!

Funny, this is the exact route I'm heading(inverted front, mono rear). Not sure how I haven't stumbled onto that build. I'm looking to keep the lines a bit cleaner, that tail just leaves me wanting moar! He nailed my exact thoughts, "with particular attention to the suspension." After riding this gsF and drooling over the gsXrd400 swap on here I really wanted a 2 smoking moto with a focus on modern suspension. Heading to check it out after work friday!

Well the old 2 stroke triples left a lot to be desired in the suspension and brakes department. I had the chance to ride an old h2 which scared the hell out of me..So so fast and sound like nothing else. I hope you do get around to building a nice smoker would be a great build based off your gs, plus your pictures are really second to none. Cheers

steezin_and_wheezin

Many thanks MARider! The foundation has been stabled. Now to scheme on it while I'm building my Subaru.
