Right now the want list is pretty small actually lol

Front brake pads
Get the dent in the tank fixed
Recover the seats (1 rip in the driver seat)
Fix the oil leaks
Valve adjustment
Carb sync

And... I need to ride this thing more lol. Cant tell if it has a problem, or I just don't let it warm enough. Ugh

Hey! Those look like the pads I pulled off the rear of my GS last season. They ate the rotor alive lol.

Luckily I saved the rotor! I've known they were almost gone for a good while so I've mainly been using the back brake  :thumb:

Yeah, there was no saving mine. The pads were down to the metal. That rotor was dead lol.

#25
Well, I still like this bike, but listed it for sale today. I don't have to commute daily on 2 wheels anymore, so I'm in the market for a 600 supersport and possibly a 1200 bandit.... lol. I want something fuel injected, for once!

R6, CBR600RR, GSX-R600, ZX-6R, VFR800, FZ-09 (long shot), FZ1, etc. I want something faster

mustangGT90210

Hey guys, I finally went and dug deep enough into my bike today to start making assumptions and get it running better. I've got a bad misfire at 7k rpm while the bike is cold, but when it's warm it clears up. So that's the symptom I've been chasing on and off for a good while.

Bike has a Dan Moto slip on, K&N drop in, and 142.5 mains, factory pilots.

So today, pulled the plugs, front cylinder is running perfectly according to the plug Rear cylinder not so much... Pulled out the plug and it was wet, very fouled, and judging by the gap/what's left of the dang thing, I'm surprised it even fires. Here's the rear plug

Does that look like normal wear? Was it gapped incorrectly to start with?

I also noticed the front cylinder sucks a lot more air through the carb mouth than the rear, leading me to think these carbs are out of sync. Could this also contribute to how badly my rear cylinder is running?

Thanks in advance!

Big Rich

I dunno much about the SV, but here goes nothing: when were the valves checked? The difference between hot / cold running makes me think it could be the valves or the carbs.

It's opener there in the wide open air...

mustangGT90210

I'm not sure to be totally honest. They should be checked every 15k miles according to the service manual, and *in theory* the motor has 25k on it. So I would hope they've been checked!

I'm leaning big towards carb sync, because with the bike running I put my hand over each carb, gave it a little rev, and the front cylinder about sucked my palm into the carb, whereas the rear pulled maybe half as hard at my hand.

Do the valves really cause that big of a difference? Back when I did the valves with my old GS, I didn't notice any difference at all. Except that it seemed to throw out the synch of my carbs lol

Well, a tight valve could drop the compression, which might explain why one cylinder is pulling harder than the other.

Besides, any problems you may be having with the carbs will need the valves to be in spec first.

Valves are not something a lot of people especially newer riders appear to think is something necessary to check. If you are already going to be taking things apart might as well check them. Better safe than sorry.

mustangGT90210

Yeah I know

The SV just doesn't have a stupid simple valve check procedure like a GS. I could adjust/check GS valves in about 10 minutes from pulling bike into the garage. This thing has shim under bucket I believe. Either way, I gotta pull up the camshaft and do some other fun little stuff. I might actually pass off the valves to my local shop (never thought I'd say that) because I work 6 days a week and don't want my bike down for 2 weeks again waiting on shims and what not

Hey I feel the same way..we all want to work on our own bikes but there isnt a enough time in the day.

mustangGT90210

If I had 2 it wouldn't be problem  :dunno_black:

I just hate being backed into the corner of only driving my truck. My lifted truck. My lifted truck on 33x12.50 tires. That averages a solid 12mpg if I baby it lol

I can afford to drive it everywhere, but I'd really rather ride and save the gas! I use about .4 gallons going to and from work on my bike, versus 1.7 gallons in my truck daily

Dropped the bike down to 87 octane... runs SO MUCH BETTER!  :woohoo: Still got the issues from before but not nearly as bad now. Turns out it was supposed to be on 87 the whole time  :embarassed:

So how did I celebrate? Added a second bike the 100mph club!

Made 2 passes saturday night. When I go next week I'll be giving it hell off the line. Still learning where it likes to be launched at to keep the front end down. I'll be in the 12's soon  :thumb:

Updates updates updates!

Finally got sick and tired of why this thing pulls left on me. Turns out the lower triple is bent. Awesome.

But on the plus side, I got to hear the mechanic ride it, and this bike sounds dang good  :woohoo:

Gonna actually start getting to work on this thing. Spark plugs, valve adjustment, carb sync, and that triple. It's already becoming the DD since I don't really like the truck I have haha

For the price of the tripple you might be able to pick up a gsxr USD front for not much more..plus should be easy enough to install..just press in your stem and get some bearings from allballs

mustangGT90210

I can get a triple with known good bearings for about $60 over on SVRider thankfully. It's gonna be on the back burner for a little bit just because of the amount of crap I have to take apart. And because I want USD forks... for the right price! lol

Lately the clip ons have been bothering me with the riding position. I just don't take enough turns to commute like that anymore :( So to fix it, handlebar risers are on the way so I can fit a regular ole 7/8" bar and regain some enjoyment here. I've got my factory GS bar in the garage so whooooo the whole swap is running me $30. Probably end up going to a drag bar, but since I have one in the garage, figured I'd use that and make sure I like the position before I go and drop more money at it.

Yes, I'm actually concerned about not liking sitting up  :cookoo: I put clubmans on my GS within 3 weeks (first bike), then ended up on a gsxr 750, and now on this clip on equipped v-twin. I've only ever ridden 1 bike that sat up straight (yamaha 250 dual sport) and 2 sportsters so they don't really count!
