Crash and burn project

Hey all, about a month ago I purchased a '92 gs500E for $300.  I had stars in my eyes at the possibility of riding again and they blinded me to my suspicions about the bike.  The craigslist ad said that the bike was complete and just needed some carb work to get running.  It was listed at $400.  I wanted a small winter fixer upper, and this seemed perfect!  It even had a title.  The guy didn't seem to want me to come look at the bike when I didn't have cash in hand, so it was about a week before I went to go pick it up.  Warning signs considered and pushed aside.  When I got there the gas tank was pretty messed up, but the holes were in the top around the cap and I had an idea to repair it.  There was corrosion around the  electronic ignition timing assembly and the guy had rattle-canned the bike.  It wasn't too bad, but it was ugly.  Honestly, I am the idiot here.  We couldn't get the motor to turn over when I was there, neither by hand or with the starter.  He insisted the bike turned over and ran when he first got it, but that it quit because the carbs were clogged.  I believed him even though I was suspicious.  He even knocked $100 off the price pretty quickly without me asking and I still fell for it.  He never gave me the carbs, said his buddy had them.  I might try one more time to see if I can get them.  Long story short, the bike has a lot of good parts but the engine is locked.  I think it's a mechanical issue.  I've tried everything to break it free.  Top end looks great, stator and charging system looks great.  I really need it gone.  Any suggestions?  It's got a clear title.  The front tire is good but the back tire has a lot of rubber burned off of it.  Probably the cause of the engine failure since it is only showing 9,300 or so miles on the odometer.  Not sure how to add a picture.  I am pretty down about this.

why not just buy an engine and swap it out?

The motor comes out pretty easily on these bikes

here i even found you a link to a cheaper engine.

I'd say part it out and get some return on your spend without any further money down a rat hole.  You might get some dough for a titled frame, and the top end.   Through in a few bucks for odds and ends parts and you are still at a profit.

Since you kinda got burned on this purchase I'll throw this out there: keep an eye out for a wrecked GS on CList / eBay. With a clean title and a parts bike, you could have a decent scoot by spring time. I saw a wrecked F model a couple months ago for about $500 - it would have been a good donor for your problems.

I am located in Lawrenceville, GA.  I have considered parting the bike out, but I am renting a room in someone's house and I don't want to have parts scattered in his garage.  I had two guys interested in the bike.  One of them was going to give me $200 because he had a blown motor in his bike.  He had bought a new one and was going to make a decent profit out of the two bikes, but I never heard from him again.  The other guy came and saw the bike, told me that it wasn't worth squat because of the rattle can paint job, that he could never swap the parts with his gixxers (duh), so he didn't want it.  He told me the title was clean though.  I am not financially able to purchase another bike and build one out of two.  I can't even purchase a cheap engine right now.  between christmas shopping, rent, paying for my girlfriend to settle into her new place, and a couple of unexpected medical bills, my funds are down to bare minimum. Everything happened at once.  I really want to get rid of the bike, save up, and buy something decent that runs.  I think $200 is a great price because most of the parts are in good shape and the frame is titled.  I had it listed as $250, but I don't want to go lower than $200.  I don't have carbs    so I'd have to buy a set of those, and the whole project would end up costing me more than buying a running bike.

Wish I lived in GA. I'd buy it for $200. Good luck selling it. Hopefully it will go soon and end your misery.  :thumb:

An interesting idea, but would a previous generation engine work with a '92 bike without extensive mods?

If so, somebody send me a GSX400 motor!

Big Rich

If I'm not mistaken, that's a GSX250 engine. Four valves per cylinder, but only half the cc's as the GS500.

I bet it would fit without a bunch of mods, but probably not worth it.
