So i just finished up my cafe build and i cant get the engine to start.  you can hear the engine turning but it just wont start and after trying several times now my battery is pretty much dead, whats with that?

Make sure you turned the GASTANK fuel valve back onto ON.

Make sure your petcock is on PRIME.

Give it 3/4 choke.

Press the starter.

Does it run?

Yes, good.
No;

Pull a single sparkplug, and leave the boot on it, ground it off to the engine. Check if it has a good spark. also make sure the gap is right.

if the spark is good on both sides.

you got a fuel problem. and its time to check for venturi pressure. [vacuum leak.] make sure the boots are tight and attached...

THIS IS IF the bike ran before you did anything to it.

ya it ran before i rebuilt it. how do i check the venturi pressure? one thing thats happening is a bunch of fuel is coming up thru the little holes on the intake side of the carb that air is suppose to be flowing thru any ideas why? and my brand new battery keeps losing charge i dont understand that.

There is a fuel shutoff where the fuel comes out of the tank (at least on my 2002) that is turned by flat blade screw driver. If the screw driver slot is horizontal, it is shut off.  Slot vertical is on position.

you have a stuck float, or float needle.

that or your fuel lines are in the wrong order. the one delivering the gas should be on the BOTTOM of the carbs. not the top.

as far as the battery, you need to re-charge it. you haven't killed it, just drained the "juice" from it. the starter drains a lot of power. so running it over and over will kill it. no biggie.

ya the port on  the top of the carbs is just a vent right?

Sounds like a fuel issue. After starting, see if your sparkplug are wet with gas. If so, first make sure that your fuel lines are in the correct order.
If still flooding, check your petcock. There is a vacuum diaphragm inside of it, and if it ruptured or worn, it won't be able to regulate the fuel being pulled into the carb. I personally think that it is the petcock or lines.
