Hi guys, not a GS question but a general bike question, HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET THE BAR INSERTS OUT!!!! Ive tried everything I can find on other forums and youtube. The inserts has 2 tabs so I press them toward each other with channel locks and then slightly treaded the screw in and give it some hard yanks, slow yanks, twisty yanks, pulled with channel locks, hit with hammer, pried with flat head screw drivers, lubed it up, this thing won't budge a mm!

anyone have some secret technique or do I need to disassemble the bars?

What year is your GS?
Most bikes have hollow bars, and the bar ends are friction fit inside the bar with an expanding nut.
Some years of the GS, however, have a welded threaded insert in the bars.
Check the FAQ, I think it says which years are like this.
Mine has aftermarket (Renthal?) bars, so I can't help with removing the inserts, sorry.

I'm thinking in the context of the OP ... might be talking about clip ons...

My reasoning? .. how the hell do you disassemble a one tube handlebar that would make it easier to remove the bar ends? , cut & destroy? ... ruins the whole concept!

So clip on barS (plural) .. of which I think some may be modular in construction? ... then you could just knock/drive the stuck plug bits out the other end?!

Yes sorry didn't give much info. this is for my CBR not my GS. They are clip ons so i guess I'm removing them because these puppies really are stuckkkkkk

Elmojo

Ah, clip ons. Nope, no idea.
Good call Janx!

just shove them in further...? at least you can get new ones to fit..?  :icon_idea:

Actually I have a set stuck in my 02 GS500.  You can either drive them in further as mentioned, or put new rubber hand grips on (which cover up the end of the bar) and use stock mirrors.

I went with a set of 'sort of' stock mirrors (standard mount but different shape).  With bar end mirrors you will have a tough time fitting your hand on the grip when you have heavy gloves on.  Plus bar end mirrors make the bike wider and harder to get into tight places ....like a garage.

Use a pipe wrench if you don't need them anymore
