Well, after a couple weeks of service being done on it, I just verbally agreed to buy a used '98 GS500E!

I figured it was time to stop lurking and start posting!

About the bike:
-it's used with 18k on it
-it's 'please don't hit me orange'
-it has some mods already done to it (pipe, seat, screen)
-it is just about to come out of the shop after having some work done on it

About me:
-I currently ride own & love a dual sport (DRZ400S)
-I live in the Catskill region of NY so I am looking forward to tooling around with some of the north jersey & hudson valley folks after I get the bike
-I love to ride!

Hey I was up there this weekend on my DL650.  I also have a 2002 GS500.  I go up the Thruway, towards Woodstock and up to Saugerites.  Into Tannersville, Hunter Mountain and down the middle of the Catskills via 47 or all the way out toward Roscoe.  Nice ride.  I did it this week in 5 hours doing about 260 miles with one bathroom stop.  The GS is a pisser to ride.  Just don't be afraid to rev it.

It gets along great! The bike is a beast on and off road. A downfall I have had is for longer road trips (over 45 mins or so) it serisouly hurts my butt and lower back.... hence the purchase of a used GS500!

As far as performance, she has PLENTY of juice to stay with traffic as long as the steady pace isn't over 70mph. The bike doesn't really like hanging above 70 for long periods of time; it just wasn't made for that really. I took it up to about 85 but it was shaking like a leaf at that point. Also, the weight is 291 dry so big trucks or gusts of wind send the very upright DRZ into different directions....like a kite on wheels! The bike LOVES to be run hard though.... and it eats up woodsy trails. One drawback is the weight/height for real dirt bike use. If you want a dirt bike, get one. If you like the best of both worlds, the DRZ is the QUEEN MOTHER!

I use mine for commuting. I take the paved roads TO work and take the dirt roads & log roads HOME from work. It's great.  :)  I love it and wouldn't trade it for any other bike.

I saw an orange 98 for sale with a black leather tank bra that looked great.  Saw it just after I had bought my 2000, but I think I would have bought the orange one if I had seen it first  :thumb:

Almost bought on orange Ford Focus, too.

Sounds like fun :)    Must get a thumper 8)   Maybe a DR650, though; it's actually less money than the DRZ :P   Have to see how they compare in the classifieds.
