I have ridden my new gs500F hard for the last 60 miles, it is now at 120miles.  I had wanted to change the oil and the filter but I do not know what filter to buy.  Nothing in the manual indicates what it is.

1.  What oil to use? Brand? I know its 10w-40 non synthetic
2.  What oil filter to use to replace the stock? Brand and model?

I appreciate the help, sorry for the noobieness.   :dunno:

I was recommanded to use Shell Rotella-T 15-40 oil...i think GSJack uses it and it was posted on a site that it's the best oil for air cooled bikes...

Filter would be a GS500 oil filter - check your dealer, and some car parts stores have them, I know Idiot Zo..., errr Auto Zone does.

Oil - I don't want to go there.  There are about 200 different opinions on this forum about oil.  Personally, I use 10w-40 synthetic for cages and it seems to work fine.

from what i have been able to pick up on the oil threads, my best guess would be not to use it before 5000 miles or whatever but NEVER use it in the first 600 miles. it is too slippery and doesnt let the parts wear like they need to. someone correce me if i am wrong.
going fast isnt the problem, its the crashing and burning that hurts

I wouldn't worry about changing the oil filter yet.  Modern engines are so well put together that there isn't enough crud to clog the filter after 120 miles.  For your piece of mind, you could drain it out and replace it, then replace it at your next change interval.

You should replace the oil filter after the first 600-800 miles.  This is to make sure that any metal shavings are cleared out.  Afterward just change at the recommended intervals.  I use Castrol GTX and it purrs like a kitten, 16,500 + miles so far.  I have a DL650 and am using the same oil.  The DL oil filter is supposed to be changed every third oil change, and get this, valves every 14,500 miles.
