I took my 97 gs500e for a few rides since the weather has been getting nicer. Things have been going well until 2 days ago. I noticed I have been flying through gas a lot more frequently than I usually did. 2 days ago I started getting sky high idle and then all of a sudden when I got to my destination yesterday everything was fine but when I left that night I couldn't start my bike. While cranking I noticed the strong smell of fuel in the air. It would only turn over if I gave it throttle while cranking and then would die. And if I put choke on the idles would super high.  When I finally got it started I noticed a stronger smell of fuel and my friend told me I was shooting fuel out of my exhaust. It died 3 times on my way home and now I'm stuck without any transportation until I figure out what's going on. Any help is very much appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it is running too rich (openign throttle makes the mixture leaner) Might be carb fuel floats not sealing and overflowing gas. Does your oil smell of gas (will damage engine if you run it like that)? is there gas in your air box?

You will need to open the carbs and make sure the needle valve seals well.

What do your plugs look like?

I opened the oil cap and there is no smell of fuel. I believe there is gas in my airbox. I have not checked my plugs yet. I will right now

Gas in airbox = overhaul carbs , needle valve and float height at least.

Plug on left the left is from the left side and the plug on the right is from the right side

newbie1993

If float height was adjusted previously how come they need to be adjusted again?

newbie1993

And can you elaborate on what you mean by needle valve and float height overhaul?

Iarn

Right side plug is very fouled up. Looks to me to be sooty from running very rich. Left side is a little rich, but not a ton.

That's my opinion.

newbie1993

I am not sure what that means. It sounds like I'm running richer on one side than the other.

Update: airbox filled with gas. Literally filled with gas
