Stunting a GS/homemade engine cage?

Ok, I'm at that point where I'm looking at a promotion, raise, and in all likelihood a 600 supersport this summer.
I don't think I want to get rid of my Gs500, and I like the idea of putting a crazy gear ratio on it, and learning to freestyle/stunt on it.
Any comments on how possible that actually would be?

First thing I would want to do though, is put a cage around the engine. I checked out the wiki page and found it... lacking.
Has anyone had any success building their own case guard? (welding and basic metal fab are things I'm comfortable with, but its always good to ask gstwins!)

I havent seen too many gs's with cages.. but if you take off the fairings you could probably find some good frame sliders and swingarm sliders and stuff, cover all the contact points so the engine wouldnt hit the ground? idk ive never built a stunt bike haha

that sounds awesome though, id like to see your progress if someone else knows how to actually answer your questions haha

Mate of mine has a stunt cage he occasionally bolts onto his gsxr 1000 ... yeah I know it's a different bike but the frame symmetry is similar. .. ill ask him for some info on it... maybe with a pic or two and some creative fabrication it could be duplicated in gs500 style?

This sounds awesome, I wish you the best of luck with this project and I hope to see lots of progress pictures  :D  :D  :D

I had the Suzuki guards on my 97 GS years ago when I was clipped in the rear by a kid in a S-10 and I high sided off across the street and the bike spun around on the it's side on the tarmac and the engine was never touched.  The sw-motech guards were more protective than mine and still seem to be avaiable.  Pics could provide you some reference if you make your own.

Put mine on to hold pegs I rarely used:

Check out Renntec's engine bar. Build something similar. Neat thing about the Renntec is it fits under plastics if you want to keep them.

Be aware, this is not very wise advise!

Just noticed those are all shown in the wiki:

Also in the wiki:

See, now THAT is what I need!

I get the feeling that the oem guards wouldn't hold up to the repeated beatings, which I'd certainly be giving them. :technical:
The Renntec and the Motech look good, but I'm in the US, and I have an 06 F model, so apparently those won't work, even though I'd likely leave the plastics off.

The Renntec's will work. With or without plastics.
You can 'order' them on ebay for $210 'shipped to your door' from the UK right now because of the good exchange rate. Normally it's closer to $240.
It would be cheaper to build your own. But, if I survive taxes I'm going to try to order a set of Renntec bars while the exchange rate is favorable. I've been putting it off for years now.

Ok, this weekend I'm going to try to replace my passenger pegs with bars, with frame sliders on the end, and do the same with a bar attached to the top engine mount bolt. I'm going to build onto that engine mounted pipe later.

Whats the consensus on cheap slider pucks? I don't need shogun $90 sliders, as I'm not planning on putting it down at speed, I just need something with more slide than a pipe...

Oh also, I'm wondering what to do about the muffler. I feel like its huge and likely to just get wrecked, though I haven't measured to see if the passenger peg "sliders" would allow it to clear (I doubt it).

I don't have the $ for a new muffler, and TX has no Db restriction, so I could just chop it off... But then I'd have to re-jet and whatnot.

Any slick ideas appreciated.

You'll go deaf in short order if you decide to chop it. Hope you've got some fancy ear plugs. Heh

A user here named Reload supplies sliders he makes. Shoot him a PM.

Okay, I may or may not be thinking of a different bike. but wasn't the GS500 the one where it was bad for a stunt bike [other then the total lack of cool factor] because the oil would slump away from the cylinders to the rear of the engine?  :dunno_black:

SV650s have that problem, the oil pickup is at the front of the crankcase. Don't know if the GS does or not.
