Got the bike a few weeks ago and started noticing a ticking noise. You can hear it really well in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro0IAEh9kTI

The ticking only happens under load in and around 4000rpm, and happens later (~5500 rpm) when cold, earlier when hot (~3000 rpm). The ticking frequency is proportional to rpm.

Re-shimmed the valves after the above video, but the ticking is still there.

Cam chain tension didn't seem loose while I was re-shimming, but haven't pulled out the tensioner to check it yet. Have other reasons for believing the problem isn't cam chain related...check the video below and see if you agree... but either way, checking this is next on my list.

I heard the starter clutch bolts have been known to cause similar noises... took a look under the starter cover & they don't look like they've backed off (see pic here: http://imgur.com/seYpnIK )

I'm now fearing its bottom end trouble. I rode her up and down the street with only one spark plug engaged at a time. The noise wasn't there when only the right cylinder was firing, and was there when only the left cylinder was firing........ :icon_sad: ... video here: https://youtu.be/P3hqgZx5WUQ

I'm now thinking it might be the left connecting rod bearing or something... however... no noticeable metallic flakes in the oil.

Any and all input is appreciated... thanks guys!

Almost sounds like an exhaust note to me. Headers tight with washers in place?
You think Pyrrhic victory is bad you should try Pyrrhic defeat!

I haven't checked those bolts. I'll do it tonight... I find it surprising that an exhaust gas flow issue would be making a kind of clicking noise, but you're not the first to suggest it. Thanks!

Wondering if this was ever solved? My bike is making the exact same noise from the exact same area. I repaired a leak on the intake and checked my exhaust. After doing a lot of searching here, I feel like I might be looking at quite a project. Likely a spun bearing somewhere in the lower end

Odd though, the bike still runs great. Unfortunately for me, I have to keep riding it as I have no other options. My truck won't start (even after dropping $400 into it 2 weeks ago) and my wife's car has some sort of computer malfunction where the Cat monitor won't reset and CA won't allow it to pass SMOG until that gets fixed. Nothing like having all of your vehicles facing some pretty major issues all at once. So I'm stuck riding my clickety-clackety GS until I can get the other vehicles fixed and have the time to crack her open.
