If you have read introducing yourself then you will understand ,if not have a look. Anyway we had this gs, tried to sell it and best offer we had was £80 from the local bike breaker. S,.o went what the hell as we cant afford to buy or make a 9sec bike we wil run in the Super Twin ET class at Shakespere County Raceway with a budget build.Striped the gs down to a frame and Dans plan was to run a longer swing arm, wider back wheel ect. Prob was the R6 wheel he got put the chain through the frame and he didn't want a welded stock swinging arm .Out with the tape and worked out it would be better to back halve the frame . Drilled through to the engine mounting tubes and found 1inch tubing fitted down the middle so made rear wheel adjuster boxes . The jig is a bit of old kitchen worktop with blocks screwed to hold frame and wheels. All worked from centre datum line. Tube was fish mouthed with 1inch hole saw and temp MIGed as waiting for a new reg for my TIG .Forks shortened 4inches and tube remachined to take plugs, handy having a tame machine shop nearby, looks as original. Frame head laid back to 18deg  and this give us 3inches ground clearance.pics to follow .

I'm really having trouble understanding what this post says.

So you built a drag bike out of a GS500? Can you please edit this post so it makes a bit more sense.
Run on sentences can really confuse someone trying to read this..

but I guess pics would help quite a bit.
You don't own a project bike..
The Project bike owns you!

I agree, I'm totally missing the point here.
Dan, please clean up your post. Use a bit more punctuation and break up sentences that are separate thoughts.
If English isn't your first language, I'm sure someone here will help you sort out the grammar.

Otherwise, looks like you are in for an extensive and expensive (but hopefully fun) project!

I knew what he said! :p. .... I use lots of. ..... in my extended posts for separate thoughts..... and

Sometimes even a line break! ... but there is a limit on edit.time with the forum!

Ron888

I understood most of that haha.
That's an interesting project.I cant imagine a GS500 would be very exciting to dragrace but the building part of it looks cool :-)

it was late and we had a family tea ----and some alcohol!!!!! Its dans dad doing the post and the build . Thought I had done ok as born before tech was invented, ha ho.  As to a GS not being a good drag bike ,well its a dial your own ET class so consistency is king and the stock GS was--- so won races. We are hoping to run high 13s due to the lack of weight . The new frame section is lighter than the swinging arm and no damper and spring .

The Buddha

He he, its one of those races where you can sand bag your way to the top eh. Fun.
But ... well ... the GS wont wheelie, so you can run a stock GS in that category, so why bother ?

Cool.

Ahhh c'mon Buddha! ... half the fun of draggin' a custom job is building it! .. and changing/tweaking this and that. ...

Plus dial your own ET is very competitive! ... sure the gs pretty much won't power wheelie but a slight lift up of wheel can upset things and then cost tenths/hundredths/thousandths on the time AND THEN ruin your whole event!

You hack on Bonneville mod bikes too Buddha?!? :p lol

Servus,

not bad the conversion.

What do you use for a motor? Give me more info about it, thank you.

Dans painted the front rim in Ford Focus ST Orange, need some more to do back rim but shop out of stock. Fitted the steering damper after first making a new lock stop ,clip ons hitting frame !!!! Got the TIG working , need battery for my good mask that I have new lenses for. Need all the help I can get to see clearly now. Pics to follow ,not able to get camera today as in bedroom and the missis was sleeping after working nights.

did some more welding, made up the bodywork so Dan can sit on . tyres fitted and today he went and put them in the frame so tomorrow (sunday) we can work out where the pegs will fit. the tank will need sectioning as the seat is a bit tight ,OK in track bottoms but not enough room for leathers. See how it goes tomorrow--------

random day off today ,managed to escape and go to local bike breaker/repair shop. He has a 500 that the engine was sold to go in a go kart . Got the rear brake set to mod as a gear shift and a bolt to replace the threaded bar in front engine mounting. Went to the machine shop to ask if he could make a shaft to outrigger the gearbox sprocket, now have to do a technical drawing for him to follow, bum forgot to ask if he can make splines . will need to bore centre of doner shaft and weld it to new shaft, it was welded to the main gear shaft that I cut it from (a triple of some make as couldn't see any cast name in case)so hope it holds ok.

got some more done, the out rigger sprocket shaft machined and bearing carrier made. Trouble is the bloke from the local bike yard has gone into Hospital for emergency back op. he was going to weld up the modified side case so that's holding things up. Redone the rear brake cylinder mounting as it looked messy , worked out the mounting for fuel tank and battery box, just need sheet ali to make it. Off the shelf chain from bike breakers is 1 link short so hope he has a longer one (121 LINKS) .Welded on the mountings for the billet pegs , need to mod gear pedal as its to far from foot. Cant work on it for next 2 week ends as prepping and racing the drag beetle ,must be spring  :woohoo: Will be picking up Dans leathers from one of the other racers. One of the next things to make is the mountings for chain roller(anti slap!!) Made the rear caliper reaction bar using the ends of the GS one and the bracket from the rear arm , looks stock with the original bolts, I was well chuffed.Piccys to follow when I get time.

Had a weeks hols ,spent Sunday to Thursday working on the bike, off today till Sunday being crew chief ,tow truck, pusher for my daughters drag beetle. Picked up the side case now its finished welding, all the bits for the air shift (cost £101 !!!!!) and new exhaust pipes bent up. Side case fully fitted with out rigger for front sprocket and the rear bolts to the frame so hope its strong enough thrust wise as it just sits on the splines . gear linkage made and air ram fitted, just need to set lever to riders foot. Braided brake lines made, both 6" shorter than stock. Wiring loom made up from old GS one, replaced terminals in original blocks and shortened as needed. Used original style bullet connectors, bought correct crimping tool so it looks factory. Needed 3  relays to work air shift/lanyard switch , recon it took me 6hours to do electrics and still  have coil terminals and air ram sensor to do. Quick action throttle and cable, rear (Thundercat r6) wheel bearings still to get. Frame can be striped down now for finish welding as some brackets are only tacked due to access . then engine work starts , decked to raise squish to 40 thou and head skim to raise compression to 10.5 or 11 to 1. Want to fit 38mm carbs but bike breakers don't wont to split a set of 4 so will run stock for time being . Then we have the body to make in glass fibre !!!!! and all ready for 2nd week end in July.Need another weeks hols--------

Have you ever looked close at the factory welds on the gs?
