Spacer jammed while pulling magneto

Hello everyone,

Today while trying to take off the magneto from my 05 gs500f to fix my starter clutch problem, I ended up wedging my spacer inside the threads of the crankshaft. The spacer is definitely not coming out without drilling it out. My question to you all is it it a necessity to remove? As far as I can tell the only reason for the hole could be for oil passages and because theirs a bolt at the end of the magneto the oil passage must not extend out that direction. It appears the farthest the spacer goes is within the first bearing journal.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

been there....

Have you tried getting a bolt extractor? I was SURE it wouldn't come out with some sort drill that could break it up and fish out the pieces, (i.e. I'd be getting a new crankshaft). I had a $5 bolt extractor to humor myself and it came out within 2 minutes. Honest to god 120 seconds.

Spacer where ??? The rotor comes out when you thread in a 17mm (I think) front axle type bolt and use a sliding hammer on that bolt.
Cool.

Not quite, mine is way more deeper. So deep Im having trouble drilling a hole through it to extract it because I can't see it at the same time. The two times I tried I started drilling off to the side of the spacer instead.

I'll try to get a picture of it tonight. Hung up the gloves for right now since I found out after finally getting the magneto off that it'll require replacing.

If it's any help, I had trouble getting the hole down the middle for the extractor as well, but once i did, it came out easy as pie. I would guess that if you can get the pilot hole in there and the extractor in, you'll be sitting pretty. But yeah I understand that would be pretty hard.

Good luck!

Holy cow

yeah maybe you just don't need to get it out? It might be a weight issue and have your crankshaft be un-counterbalanced a bit... Then again, it's almost perfectly around the rotation point right? So it should matter? I really don't know.

amish

Yeah, I'm thinking weight wise it won't matter too much since even if it is off balance since it's right near the middle and also in the bearing journal it won't make much of a difference. My biggest worry is if it is blocking a oil passage, such as the bearing journal there. I obviously didn't use the right size spacer but I can't image that the spaccer being the size it was is small enough to fit into the oil passage section.

FreshGroundPepper

At that point I am of no help. I have no idea how the oil travels that deep into the engine. Sorry.

Good luck!

The bolt holding the rotor to the crank wont let oil through either, but I cant even imagine where you got a spacer so it wont get out even after pulling off the rotor.
Cant look at your pics from work

sorry, here

I figure I'll probably just finish replacing the magneto + starter clutch and try running it.

The Buddha

Oh OK is it steel ? Try a magnet ?

How on earth did you manage that? How did it get so deep in there? What spacer is it?
I'd be making up various little things like dental probes to try to wangle it out, maybe in conjunction with a rare earth magnet.
Beam me up Scottie....
