Headlight housing size: 7 or 8 inches?

Hi all,

I'm doing an F to E conversion, and I was able to find some OEM headlight brackets on ebay. I'm in the process of buying a headlight and mount, and I was wondering if anyone knew the distance between the left and right mounts for the headlight? I did a search, and all I could find was that the headlight is 7 inches, but I wasn't sure if 7 inches refers to the lens or the light housing. My plan is to buy from Dennis Kirk, and they have a 7 in. light housing with 6 1/4 in. lens as well as an 8 in. light housing with 7 in. lens. Here are the two links for the two units:

https://www.denniskirk.com/emgo/matte-black-7-in-z1-style-headlight-66-65010.p217664.prd/217664.sku

Also, if anyone has any recommendations for headlights that they've used (and aren't 35w) for this type of conversion, I'm definitely open to suggestions! I would buy used OEM, but they're all pricey or in bad condition on ebay.

Thanks in advance!

I can't help with the size, but I can recommend against the Emgo lights. I bought one years ago and the glass would actually spin in the metal housing (so the beam wasn't horizontal anymore). I kept messing with it until one day I had to remove the headlight to do something else.... and when I went to loosen the bolt on the side of the bucket and the bucket itself ripped apart (the bolt was seized in the threads).

Have you looked for an SV 650 light?

It's opener there in the wide open air...

I would definitely be open to an SV650 headlight, but I think I'm either stuck with an expensive OEM ebay one (only found one for $120) or another universal product that's probably similar quality to Emgo. I'm also not sure if it will fit between the OEM GS500E fork brackets without modification. Thanks for the suggestion!

Would anyone with a GS500E mind measuring the distance between their headlight brackets? Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a GS.

I can measure mine later. I will update later :thumb:

Update: The lens is 7" and the housing itself is 8"

I've had good luck with a Chinese headlight on ebay that was around $45.
The only thing is the bulb is crap, lousy light pattern.  I replaced it and it works well.

If you still need that headlight measured, I can do it tonight, but I'm pretty sure the lens is 7 inches across.
I've run across this one but haven't tried it personally.   It looks like it would be just fine, and the price is right.  At $23 shipping out of California, you can't hardly beat it.  It says plastic lens, but so was the chinese one I got for twice the price.
