I broke my leg

I wrecked my bike last Thursday and broke my leg. Here's what happened. I'm coming off the freeway and it was one of those off ramps that have to switch positions with the on ramp people. The lady next to me isn't paying attention and I'm about to miss my exit so I speed up to go around. I start the turn and realize I'm going to fast for the turn. I try to apply some brakes during the turn (mess up number one). Now in my head I'm saying don't lock up the tires don't target fixate. Want to guess what I did?

The rear wheel locks up and I start sliding toward the guard rail. Now I'm thinking this is going to hurt. A few seconds before I hit the guard rail I slide on some gravel which made me feel like I was sliding fast. My leg get crushed between my bike and the guard rail and I bounce off and fly into the road.

A few minutes later someone stops and asks if I have any neck or back pain, nothing of the sort. So I take my gear off and lay down (I felt like I was going to pass out) my leg is in excruciating pain at this time. I get offered to go to the hospital but I refuse (I'm thinking more about my money than my health at this point. Finally after all my information is taken down by the police they send me on my way. I check out my bike and here are the damages, broken side fairings, bent handlebar, bent right side peg, scratches on the exhaust, and the Suzuki sticker that covers the right side of the engine fell off.

I put my leg on ice and elevate it for the rest of the day and night and the next morning it's worse so I go in and get X-rays. What do you know, I broke my fibula. So now I'm out of work and school for a week and condemned to this couch lol.

Just thought I'd share that with you guys. Never ride faster because you're in a rush and ride safe guys.

Aye lateral malleolus aka the fibula. mine broke twice well a simple fracture first then deteriorated to a spiral hence the need for ORIF ( open reduction internal fixation) it wont heal its not trying so ill be back getting operated on again in around 3 weeks id say. only thing holding it together is the titanium plate and screws. lets hope it works out for you without need for durgery Eh? 12 hours later i figured, this hurts WORSE.  time to have it looked at lol. same as you pretty much lol. got that pic as a wallpaper on my phone. as a reminder when doc/ortho says  ABSOLUTELY NO WEIGHT BEARING  this is why. i ambulate only enough to get to bathroom. beyind that sit down and elevate it. how long did your ortho tell you to stay off of it?

He said to come back in a week. Luckily there wasn't any ligament or tendon damage so hopefully I'm back on my feet soon. I forgot how hard it is using crutches.

Lousy luck mate, hope it heals quickly.
You're right... one thing us older guys have learnt over the years is that trying to 'speed' out of a situation can often (maybe not always) get you into more trouble.
Always choose the 'back-off' safe way out!!!

Yikes man.... glad you're at least able to tell your story. Sorry to hear about your spill.

Be sure to heal up fast! If I had any GS parts to donate, I would.

Aye jools nailed it.  i tried too fast too soon maybe. ill be 41 the 16th of january. im going to quit the pain meds for 48 hours to get an accurate rep. lf pain levels. DUDE use me as an exapmple. do what doc says how he says and for at least how long he ( or she) says. ill upload the pic of what can happen if you dont. mine accd to doc is irreparable this was 4 weeks after incident. its relevant for this thread as well as my doc thread because we broke the same bone. almost at same spot. age and method of fracture being 2 of few differences. ifj i cant upload it from this phone, ill upload it from office comp at church  tomorrow. actually ill upload both. from the front and from side facing fib. dont try too soon. im paying for this mistake i think. please my friend dont  do likewise.

sorry my friend. browser in this phone is obsolete. sometimes it will display, sometimes not.  anyhoo my what NOT to do example pics wont upload to either pb acct of mine. will upload them to both threads. mine may not have been preventable. then again it might have. either way i find out in 3 weeks how much of leg i stand to lose. PLEASE dont end up in same boat im in only thing holding my fib. together until next procedure is the titanium plate and screws. btw if you hate crutches as much as i do, find a walker at goodwill. i use both a wheelchair as well as a walker. walker is ALOT easier to use vs crutches.

Here's hoping you recover fast!

Sounds like pretty much the same damage to my bike when I went down, sans fairings because I have a GS500E.  Luckily for me I had all the stock parts available to get the bike back on the road with little/no cost.

Also luckily for me it wasn't at highway speeds nor did I run into a guard rail, so the worst I got was a sprained wrist.  I'm guessing you ATGATT if all you suffered was a break?  Did paramedics come out and play with you?  I only declined a trip to the hospital after getting poked and prodded everywhere that hurt and determined nothing was broken.  If I was in excruciating pain I don't think I would have refused.

I'm assuming you were able to walk, but how did you get home?  How did you get the bike home?

If he had broken the TIBIA he'd not be walking. it supports most of the body weight. the fibula otoh supports maybe 17% if that. but hurts like a sonofab*tch if broken. both he and i broke same bone in roughly same place and ill be damned around same time lol.except for maybe a month separating the two incidences. aug 12 i broke mine a week later broke left. a week later had surgery on right then 2 weeks later im told 99%certainty nothing can be done with it. his i hope and pray he has nowhere near these issues. which going by what was said he made off quite well. in an incident which shojld have been lethal. if not lethal should have been FAR,FAR WORSE. tbh it should have been far far worse than my month lol. yet he gets a minor leg fracture. am i angry no not in the least. quite the opposite.  i look at it as a parent would look at a child. or a brother to a sibling. as though my sibling got handed a new lease on life. a blank slate if you will.. tears im crying are those of joy. that he got off scott free ( in a relative sense)

I'm not sure what ATGATT is. I didn't want to spend the money for the hospital trip. I was able to walk, although it was painful. And I rode my bike home, I just shifted through the pain too. The worst part was I was about an hour away from home when it happened.

Get better my friend.
