So.. I have a 2001 Gs500 that I got from a friend. I rebuilt the motor and now I want to upgrade the bike some. I was looking at the cafe racer bars for the bike with bar end mirrors. Has anyone done this? First off, its a naked bike and all stock. here is a link to the bars. Let me know what you think.. Be honest. Have you done this or do you know anyone who has. How does it ride compared to stock.

How about interference with the bars hitting the tank?  Can you get your hand caught between the bars and tank??

As far as riding position...I have to laugh when people think that riding with back straight up and down like a school chair is comfortable..(all the road shock goes straight to the spine in that configuration)

I come from years of bicycle racing...where you strive to get your back horizontal...5 hours races common...plenty comfortable!

On the GS..leaning a bit forward..holding onto the tank with legs...put belly on tank...very comfortable...you don't need to support your upper body with you arms and hands...let legs and tank do that..

What looks really uncomfortable to me..(and ridiculous for that matter) is when you see those Harley Guys...riding with their hands up in the air on the "ape hanger" bars, while their legs are straight forward, on the highway pegs, and their toes pointed out sticking into traffic!!

To each his own, I guess!

The bars are perfect with turning. You hit the max radius before the bars touch the tank. Even still there is so much room where your hands couldn't get caught. completely agree on the apes and the straight up and down. Lower your center of gravity and lay down. Get your body into the turns. The joys of riding!

would bars  fit and work on a  F  model ?    as   other people fitted   top triple  plate  with  two bolts holding  the  handle bar  on each side  , and not hitting the tank   from the  1989  E  model .

I have the Bikemaster pair and I needed to do the "junkyard risers"  where you buy the bar clamps, flip them and buy longer bolts. I have a 2002 by the way. Without the riser it was in a very weird angle and wouldn't go further back without hitting the top of the stem tree.

Rockymountainmc has some fantastic bar risers on the cheap. They fit into the triple clamp riser and fit the bar on top for a soild contact. Come with longer bolts, and several different heights. I put some on my old honda atc, and then some on my wifes rt100!

So I bought my bike from a short person who bought it from a girl who also may have been short.

But I have these handlebars on the bike but they are effectively "backwards" so that the rider is more "upright"

i've never changed it because I never wanted to get that down and dirty with it.

Also, i like being more upright. I can't imagine being too comfortable stretched out even further.

What a great ride I must add. I finally got the bike running and I love these bars. Very comfortable and handles great

I am nearly sure tit does. These have a huge 5" drop, and you could adjust your way out with a SM 2 bar but nothing else works, unless you got one of em 4 weld buddha specials (which are known to exist, but like the blue moustached kingfisher, have only been seen once in 1000 yrs).
