Ok... so I'm going to POR-15 the tank.

The tank has a dent in it already... will this be a problem?

What's the best way to drain the tank ( For the Marine Clean and Metal Ready steps? ) and how can I ensure it's dry and ready to be sealed?

Is there a secret to getting loose debris out of the tank? Because I can still here some flying about in my now empty tank ( still need to order the POR-15 )

Basically, what I'm asking - How can I make 100% sure I don't screw this up  :o  :dunno:

Thanks :D

Fix it? The dent??? I'm listening.

And yes, it's rusty inside, hence the POR-15.

RoundBall

Ok ;)
weld  rod  to the centre of the dent, than take high temp lamp or something.....and heat damaged place, than pull rod.

Ok dont do it    your tank will blow

Try to find something to push in the tank....to touch dent inside...
than make it  straight with wooden hammer ...

When you will fix dent take fiberglass and  finish it .

Than paint it.

my English is bad......i dont have enoughf of words  :dunno:

RoundBall

but kill rust first.....cause when it will be new painted....rust killer can destoy paint :(

I hand the same dent with my gs tank.....but mine was better i had 2 holes in it  :nana:  so it was easy  to fix.

Also you can try first way.....but FILL TANK WITH WATER FIRST

RoundBall

and last 3-rd,

You can use air compressor.
fill it with air.......but not more than 2.5-3atm.

Aslo you will need to heat damaged place first.

I tryed to do it with some other tanks....WORKS  :thumb:  but not more THAN 3 :nono:

Thanks for the tank repair information Roundball.

Anyone have some sage advice on the POR-15 process?

Kerry

I don't know how similar the 2 products/processes are, but check out the Bill Hirsch Auto tips that I linked to in this old post.

Has anyone here done the POR-15 Process?

Say some dumbass ( me ) doesn't stir it ( the sealer ) before dumping into the tank and then doesn't realize it until after it's being drained out. Where does said dumbass ( me ) go from there?

My dad has used POR-15 and is about to use it on his next project bike.  The things I remember are that it takes a long time (a few days), so you have to be patient.  The biggest thing is making sure that you have every last drop of moisture out before you put the sealer in.  This could mean blowing the tank out with air, then letting it sit out in the sun for a day or two.  Whatever it takes to get it dry.

Any tank from 89 to 2000 will fit your bike

I've used it a bunch of times with great results. Fix your dent first ...Paint it  or don't paint it..(personally I'd paint it after the POR-15 treatment).... Maybe enlist the help of  a body shop or ty it yourself...( Do you have access to a welder?)

For removing the debris...take a vacuum/shop vac and take a smaller diameter tube and tape it to the  end of the vacuum hose (if your hose etc wont fit in your tank..)... Use the smaller diameter tube to suck out  whatever loose stuff  is in there.

For your question about the draining/drying part... you should have the fuel petcock off the tank so it will drain out that hole just fine....after you drain the bulk of it out keep turning the tank around and around  and blow a low temp hairdryer or just compressed air if that's all you have... Keep turning the tank over and over...this will spread the water out over  the inside of the tanks surface and it will evaporate quicker.....  After you can't see any water on the surfaces that you can see inside...keep doing it for an extra few minutes...(just to be sure..)

It's pretty easy to use ( The Whole kit)...Takes a few solid days to cure . I always give it an extra day...but it's usally not my personal bike I am doing it to...

Just follow the instructions and you should be fine.

Did anyone read the part where I already f%&ked up?  :dunno:

I appreciate the answers, however belated, but I need input on the current situtation.  :(

Give the manufacturer a call and tell them what you did.... Maybe they can tell you what to do. I'm sure they have a stripper to take that stuff out and then start over (But yeah maybe just a dif tank with no dents and no rust...)
I think up to 2000 will fit....
