I just returned from a 270-mile daytrip with davipu and mosesyang.   Because of delays and evening obligations we had to cut back towards home in the middle of our planned route.  But it was great to be out on the road again!

Details to follow....

Meanwhile, Dave is heading toward I-70 and a rendezvous near Indianapolis - tomorrow night!  :o He hopes to be back on the board sometime Tuesday.

God speed, Dave!

that boy is HARD CORE! ! ! !
cross country on a GS with straight pipes..... :o
want Iain's money to support my butt in kens shop

SmoothDave

Tell him to just stay on I-70 for another 600 miles or so, and I'll meet him for a sandwich.

:)

Yeah, about those straight (actually severely cut OFF) pipes.  We put him in the back of the threesome on our ride so we didn't have to listen to them for hours on end - like HE does  :o

No, seriously.  I led because I knew the route, and I wanted Moses in the middle because of his relative lack of experience on curvy mountain roads.  But when Dave mentioned that with him in the rear we wouldn't have to listen to his pipes that clinched it!  :)

That bike sure sounds angry when he opens it up.  SmoothDave, if you ride about 100 miles west on I-70 and wait, you could probably monitor his progress for the remaining 500 miles.

Here is the map of our ride on Saturday:

Dave and I started from my house (Map Point 1) and met Moses on the U. of Utah campus (Map Point 4).  Moses led us up Emigration Canyon (Map Point 5) and then I took up the "tour guide" position for the rest of the ride.

Here are most of my pictures from the ride:

At Provo River Falls (Map Point 7) - about 9,000 feet up.  From left to right: Moses, Dave, Kerry.

In the Provo River Falls parking area.  From left to right: Kerry's 1999, Moses' 2001, Dave's 2002.  Can you tell which one is in the middle of a cross-country ride?

If you picked Dave's bike, YOU'RE RIGHT!  (Dig the DIY luggage rack!)  Dave estimated that he had 200 lbs of luggage on the back.  :o

At Mirror Lake (Map Point 8 ), on the way down "the other side".  Elevation ~10,000 feet.

Same spot, different direction.  Bald Mountain is in the background.  Yeah, that's snow on the slopes.

We ate at an Arby's in Evanston (Map Point 9) and then decided to skip the 2nd half of our planned route.  Coming downhill on I-80 I hit (an indicated) 105 mph, and we got rained on for a few minutes.  At Map Point 10 Dave and I said goodbye to Moses and headed home "the back way".

We filled our tanks in Orem and parted ways at the gas station at about 3:00pm.  Dave headed south for US 6, I-70 and Indiana  :? ... and I rode 1.5 miles to my warm, dry home.   :icon_mrgreen:

Now that is a serious luggage rack! Bet that he is a sight to see on the highway.
Common sense in not very common.

SmoothDave

I thought he was finishing up in Indianapolis.  How far east is he coming on I70?

...hmph...

And you think I pack too much! ;)

Nice to see Kerry back out on the road again.

Hi-T

Dang !! I wish I could have joined you all on Saturday- Looks like you had a great ride...  But hey- there are two paid holidays this month- and I having some in-laws coming into town so I'd love to find some time to sneak away...

The Buddha

Davipu's rear rack is strong... and will take 200 lbs... he put a 200 lb guy on it and tested it... However with all that load, he should have has a better rear shock... that stock one is probably crying, but anyway he smashed his turn signals on a bump before he even got to my house.... remember where they were... they were under the inner fender... But good to see his pic again... too bad I didn't get one when he came to my house.
Cool.

Dave's stop in the Indianapolis area is to meet a friend or something.  His final destination is SE of there, in the middle of the North Carolina coast.

I didn't make it to indy in time, i lost about 4 hours going through the Vail pass.  i was trying to keep my fingers and toes from going numb.  at the summit  there was about a eighth of a inch of of frost covering everything.  I am guessing it was about 20 degrees + windchill.   a slight change from the summer afternoons of NC

Kerry

So if you had it to do over again, which would you choose: the winds on I-80 or the frost on I-70?

It just occurred to me that the wind would likely have been in your favor going eastward on I-80...    But hey, now you can say "I Survived Vail!"

davipu

the cold is sooooooooo much better, you can stop and warm up, when the wind blows you off the road................well you can't warm up from a pile in the ditch.

davipu

any one up for a 50cc  I-10 run the last two weeks in August?  east to west and back down I-40?

Kerry

For the uninitiated, the "50cc" Dave's talking about is the Iron Butt Association's Coast to Coast Under 50 Hours program.
