only the stupid people who ask them.

Going with that theme, I need to know how to get my bike up on its center stand.  I understand the theory:  put the stand down and move the bike backwards.  I just can't get it to do anything but drag the stand across the ground.

Like I said, the stupid people who ask them...

I put a centerstand on my GS (thanks Jared) and had a little trouble at first getting the bike up.

1. Make sure your in neutral
2. Stand on the centerstand with one foot until it hits the floor.
3. Get the bike straight so the right hand side of the centerstand on the floor.
4. Hold the left handlebar and rear passenger handle
5. Rock the bike a little back and forth and put your pressure down on the centerstand with your foot.

You should be up off the ground and on the stand now.

Foot... right foot on the stand lever, grip the left passenger foot peg with right hand, grip left handle bar with left hand and let it rip... body weight goes back, hole bike vertical and the stand making contact with the ground... and let it rip... I can get a 550+ lb vulcan on the stand this way and I am a weakling.
Cool.

This is what I do:

1.  Holding handlebars, stand on the left side (chain side) of the bike.
2.  Place foot on centerstand, push to ground, so that stand is in contact with cement
3.  Hold front brake (no particular reason...just seems safer)
4.  Simultaneously push down on centerstand (it's already touching the ground) and haul back on the handlebars.

you'll feel the bike pass the equilibrium point, and settle back onto the centerstand.  keep trying this, until you get it right.  i was surprised the first couple of times at how much effort it took, but now it's totally natural.

BTW, that's not a stupid question.  Here's a stupid question:

"Hi guys, I've never ridden a bike before, but I think they're really cool.  I want your opinion on what bike I should get this summer.  Do you think I should get the new GSX-R1000 or a Yamaha R1?"
They couldn't keep Death out, but while she was in she had to act like a lady.

Oh BTW the left leg is usually in the air as I start pulling it back... there by my whole weight is on the stand.
Cool.

try this link to a thread in the past.  Grab the bar under the seat on the chain side to pull up.  (while foot pushing down on the stand)  Getting your hands low give you better leverage to lift the rear of the bike.

No Timmy, Please get the CBR 1000 RR. That as your uncle says ... has honda quality engineering and reliability. Besides the GSXR 1000 and the R1 are both outdated and down on power as well.
Cool.

here is how I do it;

"Dad, come here and put the bike on the center stand for me."

thanks!  I felt (and i think, looked) like an idiot trying to rock the bike back and forth in my driveway.  It's always the little things that are hard to figure out with any new endevour.

Now all I need to do is pull a Tonya Harding on a couple people in the community college parking lot this Thursday so I can get into the MSF course.

Follow's Srinath's instructions and it will come up easily.  The more pressure on the stand with your foot, the easier it comes up.

cummuterguy

the main thing is to NOT try to lift the bike up, and focus on pushing the stand down...i grab the bike by the frame under the seat with my right hand, the handle bar with my left hand, pull the bike upright and then just push the stand down with my right foot... by the way, i'm a little skinny guy I weigh les than 150. and I could easily lift my yamaha xs1100special with full dress kit up like this... it's not a strength thing in other words

it kind of feels like its rolling onto the stand not being propped up onto  the stand.....does that make sense :dunno:
